So, what can you do within 24 hours in Bangkok?

This is a city that knows how to captivate you. Picture a vibrant metropolis filled with bustling streets, towering skyscrapers, and a delightful blend of tradition and modernity. From the moment you set foot in this capital of Thailand, you’re in for an exhilarating ride.

Bangkok is the capital city rich in its cultural heritage, beautiful temples, and busy markets. Our blog takes on our journey where we spent 24 hours in Bangkok. From the Grand Palace to Wat Arun, we spent some time reflecting on our daily experiences.

First things first, let’s talk about the weather. Brace yourself for the heat and humidity that Bangkok graciously offers. It’s like stepping into a sauna, but with a side of spicy street food.

So make sure you dress light, stay hydrated, and prepare to embrace that sticky, sweaty glow. Don’t worry, though, because there are plenty of air-conditioned oases and refreshing iced drinks to keep you going.

As we navigated the city, we encountered a symphony of sounds and a kaleidoscope of colors. Bangkok’s streets were a buzzing tapestry of life, with tuk-tuks whizzing by, motorbikes zigzagging through traffic, and street vendors calling out to lure you in with their mouthwatering aromas.

We heard the chorus of car horns, and laughter, and perhaps even catch a hint of traditional music blending in the background. Bangkok has something for everyone, from the grandeur of the Grand Palace to the tranquility of Wat Arun, we found ourselves in awe of the city’s stunning temples and intricate architecture.

We took a boat ride along the Chao Phraya River to explore the floating markets, where you can haggle for fresh produce or simply soak in the vibrant atmosphere.

But amidst all the chaos and excitement, Bangkok also has its serene pockets. You can escape the urban jungle by exploring the green oasis of Lumpini Park or taking a boat ride along the peaceful canals of the Chao Phraya River.

These moments of tranquility amidst the urban buzz provide a much-needed respite for the soul. Since we didn’t visit any markets on this trip, this gives us another reason to visit Bangkok again.

So, walk with us as we spent 24 hours in Bangkok. Be prepared to immerse yourself in the vibrant city of Bangkok. This city will sweep you off your feet, tantalize your taste buds, and leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. Let’s dive in!

Bangkok is in the heart of Thailand, on the banks of the Chao Phraya River and surrounded by fertile plains, canals, and waterways that crisscross its landscape. The canals are traditionally known as “khlongs” and were used for transportation.

Bangkok has a tropical monsoon climate which means there are three seasons hot, rainy, and cool season. The cool season is from November to March which is also the best time to visit Bangkok.

During these months, the weather is pleasant, the city experiences less rainfall, and humidity is low. The temperatures range from 25°C to 30°C which is ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. We traveled to Bangkok during these months and experienced larger crowds and higher prices everywhere.

The hot season is from March to May when daily temperatures can exceed 35°C and is another good time to visit with fewer crowds and lower rates for accommodations. The rainy season is from June to October with rainfall every day.

While the showers are short, traveling during these months means that tourist places are more open. Flight prices and accommodations are cheaper.

Bangkok is a food haven and with a diverse culinary scene, eating the local street food is a must. Some popular street food is pad thai which is a stir-fried rice nodded dish, and tom yum goong which is a spicy and sour soup that just bursts with flavor.

And, how can we miss out on mango sticky rice? This dessert is made with sweet sticky rice, and ripe mango slices, and drizzled with coconut milk. Mango sticky rice is tasty and believe me, when I say, one is not enough.

History

The earliest known history of Bangkok was that it was a small trading post on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in the 15th century. Back then, it was known as “Bang Makok” which means “place of the olive plums”.

Bangkok grew rapidly during the 18th century and after Ayutthaya was destroyed by the Burmese, King Taksin established a new capital on the eastern banks of the Chao Phraya River and named it “Krung Thep” which means “City of Angels”.

However, it was during the reign of King Rama IV that Bangkok would get its official full ceremonial name “Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphiman-Awatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit” which is the longest in the world.

The new name of the capital translates to “City of Angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of nine gems, seat of the King, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Vishvakarman at Indra’s behest.”

The new city was developed after the former capital city of Ayutthaya with the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha being built. These iconic landmarks are symbols of Bangkok to date.

Bangkok continued its expansion and modernization throughout the 19th century with the canals serving as transportation routes and providing irrigation to the surrounding farmland. This led to the nickname, “Venice of the East”.

Today, Bangkok is a metropolis known for its beautiful temples, delicious street food, and a city that seamlessly blends the old with the new. Bangkok left us with a lasting impression and the yearning to return.

Visa Requirements

While a tourist visa is a popular option for travelers to Bangkok, the other visa classes are transit visas, non-immigrant visas, and courtesy visas. Regardless of visa type, you would need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months and proof of onward ticket with sufficient funds for your stay.

Citizens from Argentina, Brazil, South Korea, Peru, and Chile can enter Thailand visa-free for 90 days within any 6 months. Travelers from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore are exempted from visa for 30 days.

Citizens from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Denmark, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates are also exempted from visa for 30 days so long as they have proof of onward ticket.

To determine if you need a visa, you can check the Do I need a visa section from the official e-Visa website.

Alternatively, If you’re planning to obtain a Thai visa, there are online platforms that can assist you in streamlining the application process and ensuring a smooth experience.

How do you get around Bangkok?

From tuk-tuks to trains and massive traffic jams, getting around Bangkok is overwhelming. Our guide explores the best ways you can use that saves you time and money. With an interconnected public transportation system, exploring Bangkok is now so much easier.

Skytrain (BTS) & Metro

The Skytrain and Metro are the best ways to get around Bangkok. There are four rapid transit systems in Bangkok which are the BTS Skytrain, the MRT, the SRT Red Lines, and the Airport Railway Link.

These lines are complemented by the Blue and Purple Line MRT while the Airport Railway Link connects Suvarnabhumi International Airport to the city center. The Skytrain and MRT both operate from 6 am to midnight while the Airport Railway Link is from 6 am to 12.30 am.

The fares for the Skytrain and Metro start from ฿15 ($0.50) to ฿40 ($1.15) per person with the rates depending on the zones traveled. The fares for the Airport Link are between ฿15 ($0.50) to ฿40 ($1.15) depending on distance. The Express Airport Line is ฿90 ($2.50) for one-way travel and ฿150 ($4.30) for return travel.

Rideshare & Taxi

Rideshares and taxis are the other best ways to get around Bangkok. While there is no Uber in Thailand, there is Grab and Line Man Taxi which are convenient ways to travel within the city. For Line Man, there is a call fee of ฿20 ($0.50). While commercial taxis operating through Grab are legal, private cars are not.

Taxis in Bangkok are comfortable with the drivers helpful and courteous. All taxis are metered with rates starting at ฿35 ($1). Passengers are required to pay for the toll at freeways.

Some point to note if you are taking a taxi is to never get into a taxi that doesn’t use a meter. As most drivers may not speak English, having the address of your destination in Thai would help the driver and ensure you get to your desired location.

Tuk-tuk

These iconic motorized three-wheelers are used by locals and tourists for short trips within the city. Unless you want to experience the thrill of sitting in a tuk-tuk, these are not recommended.

Drivers of tuk-tuks are known to overcharge tourists and are always found around the major tourist spots in the city. Tuk-tuks are also known to take tourists to gem shops and massage parlors to gain some commission from these joints.

Bikes

While cycling in Bangkok is slowly gaining popularity, the heat, traffic, pollution, and uneven road conditions make it difficult to cycle throughout the city. To experience another side of Bangkok, join the Colors of Bangkok tour or the classical bicycle tour of Bangkok.

Walking

With uneven footpaths and loose concrete tiles, walking is the least convenient way to get around in Bangkok. However, walking is the best way to explore the neighborhood you are staying in and is an enjoyable experience.

Some of the best areas to walk in Bangkok are Chinatown, the Old Town of Bangkok known as Rattanakosin Island, Sukhumvit Road, Rama I Road, Silom Street, Thonglor, and Chatuchak Street.

What to do in Bangkok in 24 hours?

Spending 24 hours in Bangkok is not enough to see the city in all its glory which is why recommend spending at least 5 days in Bangkok. Since we had many places to visit in one day, we started the day early with a visit to the majestic Royal Grand Palace.

We ended the day with a visit a Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn. Since we visited the Historical City of Ayutthaya, we have included our itinerary for that trip as an optional day trip if you have more than 24 hours in Bangkok.

The Royal Grand Palace

The beautiful architecture of the Royal Grand Palace

Our first stop for 24 hours in Bangkok was the Royal Grand Palace. This iconic landmark is one of the most visited attractions in the city and is a symbol of Thailand’s history and monarchy.

The palace was established when King Rama I moved the capital from Thonburi to Bangkok with the palace being the administrative seat and residence of the monarchy since then.

While our trip here was rather short as we had many places to cover in a day, we visited the major buildings such as the Dusit Hall, the Phra Monthien Buildings, and Wat Phra Kaew.

We loved that almost all the buildings were adorned with beautiful colors and intricate carvings which we are delight for us. Besides the many buildings, we loved walking past the well-manicured gardens, the ornate pavilions, and the murals about Thai mythology and history.

We paid an entrance fee of ฿500 ($14) which gave us access to the Royal Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, and the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles. This ticket was only valid on the day of purchase and for one visit only.

Wat Phra Kaew

One of the many doors at Wat Phra Kaew

Our second stop for 24 hours in Bangkok was the Wat Phra Kaew of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This sacred meditating Buddha statue is made from jade and clothed in gold and diamonds.

The statue is placed on a pedestal, high above the heads of devotees and tourists as a sign of respect. The statue is enshrined within the Phra Ubosot which is the main ordination hall with stunning murals depicting the life of Buddha.

The outer court has several galleries known as “Phra Rabiang” that shows the murals from the Ramakien which is Thailand’s version of the Indian Ramayana. Finally, we looked out for the demon guardians known as Yakshas who protect the temple and its visitors from evil spirits.

As Wat Phra Kaew is an active temple, we were required to dress modestly which meant covering our knees and shoulders. This temple is a short walk from the Royal Grand Palace.

Phra Siratana Chedi

The stupa which contains the relic of Buddha from Sri Lanka

Our third stop for 24 hours in Bangkok was the Phra Siratana Chedi which is a golden stupa erected by King Rama IV to house the relics of Buddha from Sri Lanka. Its bell-shaped circular base is from the Ceylonese-style stupa.

This towering structure is the tallest structure within the palace complex and can be seen from the Chao Phraya River. There are four entrances to this stupa, all of which were closed during our visit. Each entrance is crowned with a smaller stupa and decorated on its three sides.

After taking a few photos, we walked just south of the Grand Palace to Wat Pho or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Although it is just a short walk, we recommend you bring a hat, wear sunscreen or carry an umbrella as the heat can be unbearable.

Wat Pho (The Temple of the Reclining Buddha)

A close-up of the reclining Buddha

Our fourth stop for 24 hours in Bangkok was Wat Pho or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. This is one of the oldest and largest temples in Bangkok and is known for the reclining Buddha statue.

The first thing we noticed as we walked around the building was the unique Thai and Chinese architectural styles, decorative motifs, and colorful murals. The large gold-plated Buddha was lying on its side with his head resting on his hand.

This symbolizes Buddha’s entry to Nirvana. However, it was Buddha’s feet with inlaid mother-of-pearl illustrations with 108 panels with auspicious symbols of Buddhism. There are also 108 bronze bowls where we dropped coins as it helps to maintain the wat.

We passed by the Wat Pho Thai Traditional Medicine and Massage School where visitors can get massages by students of the school. The school has trained more than 200,000 massage therapists who are practicing in 145 countries.

As we exited, we walked to the Tha Tien Pier and took a scenic boat ride to cross the Chao Phraya River, and made our way to our last stop for our 24 hours in Bangkok trip.

Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

<img decoding="async" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/YTraOQTRCicjNxjGRpfY201zz2GXco3uPDmjdX_k_n8diX5UGxI4rAPAPWL2TUcjQJfMXBxQT-bevmYu5AsyR_eG5WGIDQwwnDvRgun0z7uUfyjdYGe0mC4qAOXGO9Z_loFySVQfn2-U6YYcGUSzZkk" alt="24 hours in Bangkok.
Caption: Wat Arun is a photographer’s delight at any angle

Our fifth and last stop for 24 hours in Bangkok was Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn which is Bangkok’s most iconic landmark known for its stunning architecture and historical significance.

We paid an entrance fee of ฿100 ($3) and were greeted by its towering prang which stood at 70 meters. Four smaller stupas surround the main tower. What is unique about this temple are the bits of porcelain and shells that decorate the exteriors of the tower.

The tower is believed to represent Mount Meru and the seven-pronged trident at the top of the central tower is known as the Trident of Shiva. The temple’s rich cultural heritage reflects a blend of Thai and Khmer architectural styles.

As we climbed the steep stairs, we enjoyed breathtaking views of the Chao Phraya River and Bangkok’s skyline. As with the temples in Bangkok, dressing modestly and appropriately is a must. Make sure you have sufficient change and be aware of tuk-tuk scammers around the temple.

The best time to visit Wat Arun is either early in the morning before the crowds arrive or just before sunset. The temple is open from 8 am to 5.30 pm. In the evenings, the temple becomes illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere.

OPTIONAL: Day Trip to Ayutthaya

Since we had more than 24 hours in Bangkok, we chose a day trip to Ayutthaya to explore its ancient ruins and its history. Ayutthaya or Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya is an ancient city about 50 miles north of Bangkok.

Ayutthaya was founded in 1350 and became the capital of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. At its peak, the city was a prosperous trade center, culture, and diplomacy. The Ayutthaya Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves the ruins of this former capital.

The temples in Ayutthaya are a blend of Khmer, Sukhothai, and Mon with their distinctive tall and pointed central towers. Today, the city is a popular tourist destination for visitors who come to appreciate its historical significance and laid-back charm.

Since this was a day trip, we only visited the three major tourist sites in Ayutthaya which was Wat Yai Chai Mongkhol, Wat Mahatthat, and Wat Rachaburana. We ended our trip with a ride along the canals and island of Ayutthaya in a long-tail boat.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkhol

<img decoding="async" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/b_pgulig8Tog6VCI-wkpTVPfZdi-a5Mautxk3h7nvA4SZ_oDnWmxlhgd8vJfKS-qi_o-RJkeb4xx71n7BB5oxeDXyBIvh9rjp5JunaPQQ6jstTybhqqrSPFgPs_lWyNVC48krSgTDDdoFVsWTtUcrX4" alt="24 hours in Bangkok.
Caption: Our first view of Wat Yai Chai Mongkhol

Our sixth stop for 24 hours in Bangkok was Wat Yai Chai Mongkhol which is known Great Monastery of Auspicious Victory. The most distinctive feature was the large and towering stupa that was surrounded by smaller stupas.

We paid an entrance fee of ฿20 ($1) for foreigners. The bell-shaped stupa stands on an elevated square base with stairs leading to the dome where relics were once placed. After praying at the main Buddha statue, we explored the temple grounds.

We walked along the rows of Buddha statues and came to the vihara of the reclining Buddha. The main ordination hall has been re-roofed with the monastery being extended to the east. Wat Yai Chai Mongkhol is open from 8 am to 5 pm with free entrance for Thai citizens.

Wat Mahatthat

Buddha’s face among the roots of the Banyan tree

Our seventh stop for 24 hours in Bangkok was Wat Mahatthat or the Temple of the Great Relic. The is famous for its Buddha head entwined in the roots of a banyan tree. This temple complex is home to the Mahanikai School of Buddhism and precedes the founding of Bangkok.

We paid an entrance fee of ฿50 ($1.50) for foreign adults and walked to our first stop which was the Buddha head in the tree roots. While no one knows how the head became entangled, a theory mentions that the tree grew around the Buddha’s head when the temple was abandoned.

What we found unique was that the temple was built in Khmer style and is almost identical to the temple mountains of Phnom Bakheng, Preah Rup, and East Mebon. We continued walking around the many temples to the assembly hall on the east with a seated Buddha image.

Another striking image was the standing Buddha statue in one of the mandapas and an ordination hall. The temple complex was built to represent Mount Meru with the surrounding stupas being the other mountains.

What was once a moat represented the cosmic ocean. While the area was crowded, the ruins have a magical charm to them and left me wondering what the temple was like in all its glory.

Wat Rachaburana

The ruins of an ancient city

Our eighth stop for 24 hours in Bangkok was Wat Rachaburana which is within the Ayutthaya Historical Park and is opposite Wat Mahatthat. As we walked through the Grand Vihan, the central prang comes into view.

According to the Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya, Wat Rachaburana was built on the cremation site of two brothers who fought to the death over the royal succession.

After the two brothers passed, the youngest son ascended the throne and became known as King Boromracha II who built two chedis on the site where his two older brothers fought.

However, it is the central prang in Khmer style that attracts the most visitors. The central tower is so well preserved that murals on the first level of the crypt are visible. The walk down is not for the faint-hearted or those who have claustrophobia as the stairs are steep with very little lighting.

While most of the valuables have been stolen over time, some items that were recovered are displayed at the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. Today, the site is an important historical site that offers visitors a glimpse into Ayutthaya’s glorious past.

Long Tail Boat Ride

Our long tail boat as we began our journey along the canals of Ayutthaya

Our last and ninth stop for 24 hours in Bangkok was a private long-tail boat ride which took us almost 45 minutes. Our boating began along the canals surrounding the island. Our boat took us through the Khlong Mueang which was the city’s ancient canals.

We passed by Wat Rattanachai, Wat Phanam Choeng, and Wat Chai Wathanaram which was one of the most beautiful sites on our boating journey. These long-tail boats are called “Rua Hang Yao” and are a common form of water transportation in Thailand.

These long-tail boats can be rented from the pier in front of the Chantrakasem Palace Museum near Hua Ro which is opposite Wat Monthop.

What are the safest areas to stay in Bangkok?

Sukhumvit

This is one of the most popular and safest areas to stay in Bangkok. Sukhumvit Road and district is known for its bustling streets, upscale shopping malls, and vibrant nightlife.

The road runs through several neighborhoods with BTS Skytrain and MRT connecting through the main neighborhoods such as Nana, Ashoke, Thinglor, and Ekkamai. Spend some time shopping at Terminal 21, a mall designed like an airport departure area, or watch the sunset from the Octave Rooftop Bar & Lounge.

Chiang Mai is the largest city in Northern Thailand and is the capital city of Chiang Mai Province. A unique feature of Chiang Mai is that it sits among misty mountains that are home to the hill tribes.

There are 117 Buddhist temples with several active temples, some in ruins while others are covered in vegetation. The major festivals that are celebrated here are the Loy Krathong, Songkran, Chiang Mai Flower Festival, and Intakhin (City Pillar) Festival.

This festival is celebrated throughout Thailand and is known by several names across the world. In Myanmar, it is Tazaungdaing and in Sri Lanka, it is II Full Moon Poya, and in Cambodia, it is Bon Om Touk.

The term “Loy” in Thai means “to float” while a “Krathong” is a traditional offering of food and desserts that is made with leaves and flowers. This festival traces its origins to India where Thais use a Krathong to send thanks to the Goddess of Water, the Goddess Ganga in Hinduism.

In Chiang Mai, this festival coincides with Yi Peng which means “full moon day on the second month” of the Lanna calendar. Sky lanterns are lit to prevent troubles and mishaps and are used to decorate homes.

According to an ancient chronicle, it was the alliance of three kings, Phaya Meng Rai of Chiang Mai, Khun Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai, and Phaya Ngam Meuang of Phayao who forged the Kingdom of Lanna in 1296 with Chiang Mai as its capital city.

The statue marking this event is the Three Kings Statue at the Old City where people leave bouquets, incense, and candles in honor of the men who brought this city to life. The ancient city is Wiang Kum Kam which was built by King Mengrai.

When the Lanna Kingdom declined, Chiang Mai became part of the Thonburi Kingdom and Chiang Mai was soon abandoned. Due to its status as being the northern capital city of Thailand, Chiang Mai soo grew to become a cultural, economical, and trading hub.

Are 4 days in Chiang Mai enough?

To explore Chiang Mai alone, four days is sufficient. In our Chiang Mai Itinerary 4 days, we explore the Old City temples, the ethical Elephant Nature Park, the city’s famous temple, and end our itinerary with a visit to Bhubing Palace and some shopping.

Day 1: Old City Temples

The first day of our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days begins with a visit to the three main temples that are historically significant in Chiang Mai. Other than these temples, the old walls of this fortified city are intact.

The Tha Pae Gate marks the eastern side of the Old City is now a geographical boundary between the Old City and New City. On Sundays, there is the Sunday Walking Market between Tha Pae Gate to Wat Phra Singh filled with homemade local food, hill-tribe crafts, and is a perfect place to pick up souvenirs.

Another monument is the Three Kings Statue marks the event where three rulers founded and built Chiang Mai. This statue is in front of the Chiang Mai Art & Cultural Center.

The ancient city of Wiang Kum Kam is a historic settlement built by King Mengrai along the Ping River. The city was abandoned more than 700 years ago due to frequent floods.

The main temple here is Wat Chedi Liam or “Temple of the Square Pagodas” which remains a working temple with resident monks.

The first in our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days is Wat Chedi Luang. The literal translation of Wat Chedi Luang is the temple of the royal stupa. There were originally three temples within the temple complex. The other two temples were Wat Sukmin and Wat Ho Tham.

As you walk into the temple, look out for a dipterocarp tree that stands at the left from the entrance. Local legend has it that if this tree falls, a catastrophe would befall the city. A shrine next to the tree holds the Sao Intakhin which is the “spirit of the city”.

Around the grounds, you would also find Phra Chao Attarot where you would a beautiful standing Buddha. Another smaller temple is the Wat Phan Tao which is a beautifully carved teak temple.

The main structure here is the ruined brick structure of Wat Chedi Luang that rises about 60 meters in height. All four sides are flanked by staircases that are guarded by Nagas. At the niches, there are stone Buddha images. On the eastern side niche, you can find the replica of the Emerald Buddha that was kept here.

When was Wat Chedi Luang built?

King Saen Muang Ma began construction of the temple in 1391 as a temple to hold the ashes of his father, King Kun Na. The temple was completed in 1475 and was home to the Emerald Buddha. In 1545, an earthquake damaged the temple, and the Emerald Buddha was moved to Luang Prabang.

What does Chedi mean?

In Thailand, Chedi means Buddhist stupa. Chedi’s are different from stupas in that they have a bell-shaped base topped with a spire.

How much is the entrance fee to enter Wat Chedi Luang?

While entry to Wat Chedi Luang used to be free for everyone, the entrance fee is now ฿40 ($1.22) for adults and ฿20 ($0.61¢) for children. This rate only applies to foreigners. The temple is open daily from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm.

The second in our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days is Wat Phra Singh. This temple is an easy 10-minute walk from Wat Chedi Luang. The full name of the temple is Wat Phra Buddha Sihing and according to legends, the statue was based on the lions of Shakya.

The construction of this temple began in 1345 when the fifth King of the Mengrai Dynasty built this chedi to store the ashes of his father. Three funerary urns were found during the restoration works in 1925 inside a small chedi.

The main attraction of this temple complex is Wihan Lai Kham is an example of Lanna architecture. The murals on this temple are remarkable and depict the lives of the locals and popular folklore tales.

Another structure worth visiting is the Ho Trai which is the temple library that is set on a stone base with guards flanking the stairs and lions emerging from the mouth of the Makara, a mythical water creature.

How much is the entrance fee to Wat Phra Singh?

The third in our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days Wat Chiang Man. This temple is a 5-minute drive or 15-minute walk from Wat Phra Singh. This temple is the oldest in Chiang Mai and was built by King Mengrai in 1297 as the first temple of the fortified city of Chiang Mai.

There are several sights within this temple complex that are worth exploring. The first is Wat Chedi Chang Lom which is known as the “Elephant Chedi”. This is the oldest structure where a square base supports 15 brick and stucco elephants that seem to carry the upper levels on its back.

The Main Wihan has a statue of Buddha with an engraving of the year 1465, making it the oldest statue of Buddha from the Lanna Kingdom. However, the two smaller wihans are of equal importance.

The smaller wihans are home to two important statues of Buddha that are believed to have protective powers over the city of Chiang Mai. The statues are Phra Sae Tang Khamani or the ‘Crystal Buddha’ and Phra Sila which is a stone bas-relief of Buddha taming the elephant Nalagiri.

The second day of our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days begins with a visit to the Elephant Nature Park. This sanctuary and rescue center for elephants was founded by Lek Chailert who began working on elephant conservation since 1996.

The park is about 37 miles from Chiang Mai and has a duty of care to protect those under their umbrella. The duty of care is not only towards its elephants, it is also towards its staff and guests. The other rescued animals in their care are buffaloes, dogs, and cats.

The fourth in our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days is at Elephant Nature Park. This elephant sanctuary is one of the most ethical and best-known in Thailand. The unique feature of this park is that it is a chain-free sanctuary for elephants.

Each of the elephants here come from abused backgrounds and were formerly circus performers, used for trekking and logging activities, and street performers. By the time they arrive here, these elephants have declining physical and mental health, are in broken spirit, and have other age-old complications.

The sanctuary provides these elephants with a chance to relax and rehabilitate. The elephants here have freedom of movement. To enrich the lives of these majestic creatures, the park has stopped the bathing of elephants.

The park has a “Hands Off” and “Saddle Off” policy in place to minimize human interaction with the elephants. You can touch the elephants during feeding times.

How many elephants are at Elephant Nature Park?

As of 2016, Elephant Nature Park had rescued about 200 elephants. According to the International Union of Conservation of Nature’s Red List, the Asian elephant is an Endangered Species with about 3,341 left in Thailand and 51,680 in the wild.

How much is the entrance fee to Elephant Nature Park?

There are several packages to choose from at Elephant Nature Park. The Elephant SkyWalk package is ฿3,500 ($106) for adults while the Short Park Visit is ฿2,500 ($76.31) for adults.

For the adventurous, you can experience an Overnight 2 Days 1 Night Visit for ฿5,800 ($177) for adults.
Day 3: The City’s Famous Temple

The third day of our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days begins with a visit to Chiang Mai’s famous temple, the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. The term Doi Suthep refers to the name of the mountain that the temple sits on.

The fifth in our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. This temple has beautiful views of Chiang Mai. As this is an active temple, visitors are expected to be decently dressed. Footwear would have to be removed before entering the temple.

Legends of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

There are several legends associated with this temple. The first is that a 14th-century monk from the Sukhothai Kingdom had a vision. In his vision, he saw a fire and saw a bone glowing and believed it to have magical powers.

When the monk took the bone to the King of Sukhothai, the bone did not show any abnormality and the king told the monk to keep it.

However, King Nu Naone of Lan Na Kingdom heard about this relic and invited the monk to his kingdom. When he arrived, the relic had broken into two pieces. One part of the relic was placed at Wat Suan Dok.

The other piece was placed at the back of a white elephant which was released into the jungle. The elephant walked up Doi Suthep, trumpeted three times, and dropped dead. King Nu Naone took this as a good omen and began building the current temple in 1383.

How long does it take to visit Doi Suthep?

It would be best to allocate at least 5-6 hours to visit the temple. This is because you may take at least an hour to get to the base of the temple from Chiang Mai.

How do I get to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep?

The temple is within the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. There are three ways to get to Wat Phra Doi Suthep. These are:

Road

If you are driving, take Route 1004 or Huay Kaew Road towards Chiang Mai Zoo and Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. The route has many curves and will take you to the base of the temple. The temple is approximately 9 miles from Chiang Mai city.

Songtaews

Another option to get to the temple is via the red songtaews. Songtaews are pickup trucks that have been converted to passenger vehicles and usually consist of two rows or levels. The drivers usually wait until the truck is full before leaving for its destination.

Songtaews leave from Huay Kaew Road and should cost about ฿300 ($9.15) per person one way or ฿500 ($15.25) if you want the driver to wait for you and bring you back to the city.

Hiking

The last option is for the adventurous as you can hike up to the temple. To get to the trailhead, you need to get to Suthep Road. From there, past Chiang Mai University until you see some green areas. There is a signboard that says “Nature Hike”.

At the sign, turn right onto a narrow road, walk straight for about 100 meters and then follow the left turn curve of the road that would lead you to the trailhead. This hike is known as the Doi Suthep Monk Trail and is a 6.3 kilometer moderate and heavily trafficked hike.

The sixth on our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days is Bhubing Palace. The Bhubing Rajanives Palace was built in 1961 as a royal winter palace and a royal guesthouse for prominent state visitors from abroad.

The palace was built based on ruean mu (“group of houses”) which is a central Thai architectural style where groups of houses are built on stilts. The palace took 5 months to build and its first foreign dignitaries were King Fredrick IX and Queen Ingrid of Denmark in 1962.

The admission fee for foreigners is ฿50 ($1.50) and is open daily from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. The palace is closed in the first quarter from January to March when it is used as a royal residence.

Shopping

The seventh and last in our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days is shopping in and around Chiang Mai. While Chiang Mai is known as the capital for arts and crafts in Thailand, it is its walking streets that draw the crowd.

The Saturday Walking Street is along Th Wualai and begins at 4 pm when the road closes and becomes a pedestrian street. If you are looking for hill-tribe trinkets, paper lanterns, umbrellas, and silver jewelry, then this is the place to be.

I’ve missed Saturday Walking Street, what else can do I do?

Fret not! There is the Sunday Walking Street that opens from 4 pm onwards. It starts at Tha Pae Gate and covers the full length of Th Ratchadamnoen. If you arrive early, you may see some vendors perform prayers after the first sale of the night.

This is with the hope that more sales would follow through. Sunday Walking Street is known for its silk, paper lanterns, ceramic, and wooden items.

Is Chiang Mai walkable?

Our Chiang Mai itinerary 4 days considers the fact that the Old City of Chiang Mai is walkable. To begin our walking tour, we start at the Three Kings Monument on Ratvithi Road.

From there, you can walk across to the Lanna Folklife Museum which is towards the left, and the Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center which is located on its right. After that, take a 4-minute walk to Wat Inthakin Sadue Muang.

The Wat Inthakhin Sadue Muang is described as “the temple of the city navel” as it lies at the heart of the Old City. After Wat Inthakin, take a 10-minute walk to Wat Chiang Man.

From Wat Chiang Man, take an 11-minute walk to Wat Dab Pai and pray for your good health. Local legend mention that a very sick monk came to this temple and prayed for recovery. He recovered immediately and constructed the present temple as gratitude.

After that, take a 6-minute walk to Wat Phra Singh, the oldest royal temple in Chiang Mai. Then, make your way to Wat Tung Yu which is an easy 2-minute walk. Wat Tung Yu is more than 500 years old and is a temple named after the ceremonial umbrella for royalty with the rank of a prince.

After that, take a 7-minute walk to Wat Chedi Luang with its spectacular chedi was once the highest in the region for almost 500 years. Finally, end your walking tour at Tha Phae Gate, the once city wall that protected this ancient city.

For your convenience, our free walking tour is shown on the map below.

How expensive is Chiang Mai?

According to Budget Your Trip, the average daily cost per person per day is ฿1,307 ($40) which is ฿9,146 ($279) per week, and ฿18,292 ($558) for two weeks. A typical double-occupancy room would cost ฿1,515 ($46).

The average cost of food is ฿299 ($9.12) with breakfast being the cheapest meal. The prices at dine-in restaurants cost more than street food and fast food prices. Transportation per person is approximately ฿106 ($3.23) on local transportation.

Although tipping is not customary or mandatory in Thailand, an average visitor spends about ฿58 ($1.77) on tips and handouts. The usual tipping amount is 5% of the total bill.

Whether Chiang Mai is expensive or not would depend entirely on you. You can visit Chiang Mai on a budget by choosing cheaper hotels and eating at local restaurants, with an occasional meal at a fine-dining restaurant.

There are three main seasons in Chiang Mai. These are the rainy season, the hot and humid season, and the cool and dry season.

The rainy season is from June to October with rains peaking during August and September. During this season, waterfalls and river-based activities could be closed. The two events in this season are the Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival and the Khao Phansa, a Buddhist equivalent to Lent.

The cool and dry season begins from November till February which also coincides with the peak tourist season. The second half of November is the absolute peak as Loy Krathong takes place. You can expect increased prices and traffic at this time.

Finally, the hot and humid season begins from March till May which coincides with the “burning season” where thick haze covers the city. The two festivals to look out for are Songkran and the Inthakhin Festival where the locals pay respects to the City Pillar.

Do they speak English in Chiang Mai?

Yes, you would find English-speaking vendors and guides at tourist spots around the city. In other areas, English language proficiency is low among the locals. Hence, a basic knowledge of Thai would be sufficient to make your way around.

What language is spoken in Chiang Mai?

The language spoken in Chiang Mai is Kham Mueang or Lanna. This language dates back to the Lanna Kingdom and is now on the verge of extinction. An example of Lanna is that the “ch” sound becomes “j” and an example is “Chiang Mai” is pronounced as “Jiang Mai”.

A distinct feature is that women add “jao” while men add “krub” at the end of a sentence. Some Lanna words such as hello are sawadeejao while for men, it is sawadeekrub. Thank you is khob kun jao for ladies and men is khob khun krub.

Is Chiang Mai worth visiting?

Yes, Chiang Mai is worth visiting at least once in your lifetime. Here are some reasons why.

Ancient Lanna Culture. The remnants of temples of the ancient Lanna Kingdom that ruled Chiang Mai are sprinkled all over the city. These temples are unique in that they are designed based on Burmese style architecture.

Vegan and vegetarians delight. There are plenty of vegan and vegetarian restaurants that are affordable and have an incredible selection with soy-based and faux-meat dishes.

Greenery. With a mountainous terrain as a backdrop, the city does not have the same hectic city vibes as Bangkok.

Hipster vibes. With laid-back vibes, chilling out in Chiang Mai is easier with hip cafes, and plenty of hill-tribe shopping.

Night Safari. The Chiang Mai Night Safari is similar to Singapore’s in that there are three sections: the Savanna Safari, Predator Prowl, and the Jaguar Trail. Don’t miss this unique experience!

Chiang Mai is a little off the beaten path that is worth exploring, even for a few days. Relative to Bangkok, Chiang Mai is much cheaper and affordable and gives visitors a unique perspective of ancient ruins among modern amenities.

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s go!

Krup Thep Maha Nakhon or Bangkok as we know it began as a trading post of the Ayutthaya Kingdom on the delta of Chao Phraya. The city is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest place name with 168 characters. Its full name is:-

Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit.

Which consists of Pali and Sanskrit words that translate to:-

City of angels, the great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, the seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Vishvakarman at Indra’s behest.

It was a Thai rock band, Asanee-Wasan that popularized the city’s full name by repeating it in its lyrics in their song “Krup Thep Maha Nakhon” in 1989. You can hear their version in the voice audio below.

Brief History

Unlike other major capital cities, Bangkok’s history dates back to the mid-15th century under the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The trading post became important due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River.

It was King Mongkut or Rama IV who was open to Western ideas and modernization. Industrialization began after the signing of the Bowring Treaty. One of King Mongkut’s achievements was constructing the city’s paved road at Charoen Krung Road. Other major roads include Bamrung Mueang, Fueang Nakhon, and Si Lom roads.

Modernization of Bangkok

King Chulalongkorn expanded on his father’s modernization plans. The nationhood concept was adopted, slavery was abolished and he created a central bureaucracy system. And, more roads were built.

It was clear that Chulalongkorn had a fascination with all things Western. This is seen in two of the buildings that he commissioned, the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall that is linked by the Ratchadamnoen Avenue that was inspired by the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

Bangkok Rail System

The first railway in Bangkok is the Paknam Railway built-in 1863. The line linked Bangkok to Samut Prakan. Later, it expanded to Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nong Khai, Ubon Ratchathani, and Su-ngai Kolok. Bangkok’s rapid transit system began in 1999 with the introduction of the BTS of Skytrain.

The Bangkok Metropolitan was enhanced with the introduction of the MRT. An elevated Airport Rail Link (ARL) is the latest addition to Bangkok’s railway lines.

SkyTrain

This mass transit system was inaugurated with two lines and a total of 23 stations. The first line is the Sukhumvit Line, and the second line is the Silom Line. These two lines are the GREEN LINE.

MRT (Metro)

The Bangkok Metro or Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is completely underground, is 13 miles in length, and has 18 stations. This is the BLUE LINE.

City Line or Airport Rail Link

The Airport Rail Link is a 28-kilometer elevated line that links Phaya Thai Station (BTS Skytrain) to Suvarnabhumi Airport and Makkasan Station (MRT) to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The fares, depending on the distance traveled are about ฿45 ($1.35) for the journey to Phaya Thai Station, and ฿35 ($1.05) to Makkasan Station. A complete urban rail map with future rail updates is essential when traveling to Bangkok.

Rabbit Card

This is Thailand’s first electronic money contactless smart card that can be used across several merchant categories. Once purchased, you can swipe this card for payment on BTS SkyTrain, and then grab a bite at McDonald’s before heading to Madame Tussauds.

There are three types of Rabbit Cards available. The Standard Adult Card is ฿200 ($6). The Student Card is for students aged 23 years and below. A Senior Citizen Card for Thai senior citizens aged 60 years and above.

Day 1: Temples

We start our 5 days 4 nights Bangkok itinerary with a temple run. We explore the three main temples that are on the typical tourist trail in Bangkok.

Wat Phra Kaew

First on our 5 days 4 nights Bangkok itinerary is Wat Phra Kaew. Officially, it is known as Wat Phra Sri Rattana Sadsadaram which means “the temple containing the beautiful jewel of the monastery of the divine teacher”.

Because this temple is within the Grand Palace, many state and royal activities are conducted here that make this temple is the most sacred in Thailand.

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Based on historical sources, the Emerald Buddha first appeared in the Lan Na Kingdom. A local legend mentions that a bolt of lightning struck a chedi which then revealed a Buddha statue covered in stucco.

The statue was placed in an abbot’s residence where he noticed the stucco began to flake. As he peeled the stucco, he found that the statue was carved out of semi-precious stone with an emerald green appearance.

The statue is Phra Kaew Morakot or the “Emerald Buddha”. The emerald refers to the color of the statue and not its composition. The statue was carved from a single jade stone.

Entrance Fee

Foreigners pay ฿500 ($15) entrance fee which includes access to the Grand Palace.

Visiting Hours

Opened daily from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm. The ticketing office closes at sharp 3.30 pm.

How do you get to Wat Phra Kaew?

The cheapest way to get to Wat Phra Kaew is through a river cruise. You can hop on the Chao Phraya Express Boat Service and hop off at the Tha Chang Pier (N9). The rate for this boat service is ฿200 ($6).

You can also take the Blue Line MRT and get off at the Sanam Chai station which is Bangkok’s most stunning subway station. It is a replicate of a Throne Hall in the Rattanakosin Era.

Second, on our 5 days 4 nights Bangkok itinerary is Wat Pho or Temple of the Reclining Buddha. Wat Pho is Bangkok’s oldest temple and was established before Bangkok existed. The original name is Wat Photaram which is how the temple got its name.

The Reclining Buddha

This kingdom is the precursor of modern Thailand, and this is why Bangkok maintains the name “Ayutthaya” in its formal title. The highlights would be visiting the 3 main temples of Ayutthaya.

The first story speaks of a thief who stole the head and placed it on the ground to collect it later. The thief never returned and the tree took the head into its roots.

The second story is that the Buddha’s head fell to the ground during the siege in 1767 which ended with the defeat of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The Burmese Kingdom razed Ayutthaya to the ground, destroying temples, statues, and records.

The once-thriving city was left broken, abandoned, and plundered until the Government brought it back to life in the 20th century.

The thirteenth and last on our 5 days 4 nights Bangkok itinerary is Siam Paragon. This is one of the largest shopping malls in Bangkok and includes the Sea Life Bangkok World Ocean aquarium.

The Siam BTS Station is on the Mezzanine Floor of Siam Paragon. Some tenants include Burberry, Bvlgari, Chanel, and Cartier. This shopping complex has 10 floors, so you definitely need more than a day to cover everything here.

If you ever wondered how a car showroom in a shopping complex looks like, head to the Second Floor and walk into the Aston Martin, Bentley, Maserati, Porsche, and Rolls Royce showrooms.

We recommend the Kate Spade New York Lage Canvas Tote Bag made from heavyweight canvas. This makes it durable. You can reuse the bag as it can easily hold all your books if you are going to the library or a weekend getaway.

The first area that is suitable for 5 days 4 nights Bangkok itinerary is Sukhumvit. Sukhumvit Road is Highway 3 and is one of the four major highways in Thailand. Sukhumvit Road is one of the longest boulevards in the world and runs east towards the Cambodian border.

The road name changes to Phloen Chit Road and Rama I Road towards the western end of the boulevard.

The third area that is suitable for 5 days 4 nights Bangkok itinerary is Khao San Road. This short street is in Central Bangkok and is about 1 kilometer north of Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew.

Khao San translates to “milled rice” which hints that in the past, this road was one of Bangkok’s famous rice markets. During the last 40 years, the road has developed into a backpacker ghetto with cheap accommodation and as a base for travels all over Thailand.

With the door lock and money belt, there is one last item that always completes our trip is an international power adapter. I’ve used many international adapters over the years, some did not fit while others did not match the sockets of the rooms I stayed at.

Until I found Saunorch Universal Travel Adapter. This is a one-piece adapter that fits US, UK, EU, and Asian sockets. It can simultaneously charge 5 devices at one time. What I love about it is that it has a smart chip that automatically detects your device, adjusts its current output speed, and boosts charging speeds.

What is the Thai greeting for hello?

The standard Thai greeting which you will use is Sawasdee Khap for males and Sawasdee Khaa for females. This greeting is accompanied by the Wai greeting. The wai is simply bowing your head with placing your palms together with the fingertips of your palms touching the tip of your nose.

The level of respect is by the depth of the bow. A senior citizen may return the wai with their hands at chest level and with a slight bow, similar to a nod. This is rap wai.

Do note that greetings in Thailand take gender into account. Males would end their greetings with Khap while females end it with Khaa.

How do you reply to Sawadee Khap?

Males would answer, sabai dee, khop khun khap which means “I’m fine, thank you”. Females would answer, sabai dee, khop khun khaa.

Thai cuisine is light, aromatic, and spicy at the same time. Traditional Thai cuisine has four parts, which are tom (boiled), yam (spicy salads), gaeng (curries), and tam which refers to pounded food.

According to CNN’s 50 Best Foods In The World, Thailand had the most number of dishes with tom yam goong in 4th place, pad thai in 5th place, and som tam in the 6th place.
