Do you need reasons to visit Angkor Wat?

These were our 13 reasons to visit Angkor Wat. And, we recommend you visit Angkor Wat at least once in your lifetime. We visited Angkor Wat on our maiden trip to Siem Reap and we loved it!

Angkor Wat is a masterpiece located in the heart of Cambodia’s Siem Reap province. Known as the jewel of Khmer architecture, it’s the world’s largest religious monument.

Its intricate design and rich history make it a must-visit destination for any traveler, especially those interested in Southeast Asia. King Suryavarman II built the temple complex and originally dedicated it to the Hindu god Vishnu.

The towering spires and intricate bas-reliefs depict scenes from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The attention to detail is inspiring. And, as you wander through the corridors and galleries, you’ll capture countless photo opportunities to captivate your readers.

What’s truly fascinating about Angkor Wat is the seamless fusion of Hindu and Buddhist elements. In the 14th century, a Buddhist temple was established, adding depth to its cultural significance. The central spire represents the mythical Mount Meru, the home of the gods in Hindu cosmology. While the bas-reliefs tell stories from the life of Buddha.

1. Architectural marvel

We made the trip to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat, one of the architectural marvels. We were immediately in awe by its sheer size and grandeur. The temple is a true architectural marvel and a masterpiece that is a testament to the Khmer Empire’s rich history.

As we approached the temple, the intricate carvings and bas-reliefs that adorned its walls was a sight to behold. The carvings depicted scenes from Hindu mythology and provided a glimpse into the religious beliefs of the Khmer people.

Built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II, the temple combines Khmer and Hindu styles. The central tower, which represents the mythical Mount Meru, is the most recognizable feature of the temple. The five soaring towers surrounding it symbolize the peaks of this sacred mountain, creating a truly mesmerizing sight.

As we walked around the temple, we admired the intricate details of the carvings and sculptures that adorned its walls and pillars.

Astronomical principles and the Khmer’s spiritual beliefs are meticulously aligned with the temple’s layout. The temple was a center for worship, education, and knowledge.

Angkor Wat was an unforgettable experience that left a lasting impression on us. The temple is a living piece of art, and we were amazed by the incredible craftsmanship and engineering skills of the people who brought it to life.

2. Historical significance

Angkor Wat was built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II with this sprawling masterpiece standing as a symbol of Khmer architectural brilliance and Hindu-Buddhist culture.

For history lovers, the historical significance is one of the reasons to visit Angkor Wat. At its core, Angkor Wat is a fusion of religion and architecture.

Originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, its five towering central spires represent the five peaks of Mount Meru, a sacred mountain in Hindu mythology.

However, over the centuries, it transformed into a Buddhist temple, highlighting the fluidity of spiritual beliefs in the region. Historically, Angkor Wat served as the political and religious center of the Khmer Empire.

Its intricate bas-reliefs depict epic tales of Hindu mythology and scenes from the Khmer Empire, offering valuable insights into the culture and life of that era. The vast moat surrounding the temple served both as a protective measure and as a symbol of the cosmic ocean, separating the mortal world from the divine.

The decline of Angkor Wat and the Khmer Empire can be attributed to factors such as shifting political powers and environmental changes. The temple was eventually hidden by the dense jungle until its rediscovery in the 19th century, capturing the imagination of the world.

Today, Angkor Wat stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing millions of travelers and historians. Exploring its intricacies allows one to step back in time and unravel the rich history of Cambodia.

3. Sunrise over Angkor

We skipped the overcrowded sunrise photo trend at Angkor Wat. Since, we visited Siem Reap during the monsoon season and it was raining the night before, clearly, sleep was more important.

We took a good reflection photo at the pond in the afternoon, without the crowds.

The best time for Angkor Wat sunrise photos is from November to March. The monsoon season is from May to November which brings rainy nights and cloudy skies.

To catch the perfect sunrise over Angkor, arrive by 5 a.m., with a ticket and sunrise/weather checks advisable.

This is one part of the Churning of the Ocean bas-relief at the Eastern Gallery

4. Intricate bas-reliefs

Another one of our reasons for visiting Angkor Wat was its intricate bas reliefs. These beautiful carvings line the inner walls of the outer galleries. The first bas relief is the Battle of Kurukshetra which is based on the Hindu epic, Mahabharat.

The bas relief shows the battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas. From the advancing Kaurava armies to the death of Bhisma. To make things clearer, the Pandava armies are moving from right to left while the Kaurava armies move from left to right.

However, it is the Churning of the Sea of Milk bas relief at the southern section of the eastern gallery which shows 92 asuras and 88 devas using Vasuki to churn the sea under Lord Vishnu’s direction.

Unlike other bas reliefs, the characters in the churning of the sea of milk are clear which makes it the easiest to identify and understand.

The other bas reliefs are the historic procession of Suryavarman II and the three tiers of 32 hells and 37 heavens with Lord Yama (the Hindu God of Death) sitting on his vehicle, the bull while the sinners receive their punishment at the lowest tier of the bas relief.

The breathtaking view from the third floor of Angkor Wat

5. Breathtaking views

If the above four reasons to visit Angkor Wat are not enough, will this view from the top tier of the temple change your mind?

Instead of joining the bustling crowd to catch the sunrise at Angkor, which was not on our agenda, we decided to take a different route by ascending to the upper levels of the ruins. The journey was challenging, but the effort was worth it as we were rewarded with an unparalleled and breathtaking view.

The panoramic views of the ruins set amidst the dense forest were truly mesmerizing. The intricate details of the temple complex were visible from a bird’s eye view. We were able to observe the fine carvings and intricate details that adorned the walls and pillars of the ruins.

The contrast between the ancient ruins and the lush greenery surrounding them was a sight to behold. We highly recommend spending some time at the upper levels as there were far fewer visitors, which made the experience all the more enjoyable.

We were able to take our time and appreciate the beauty of the ruins without feeling rushed or crowded. It was a peaceful experience that left us feeling rejuvenated and in awe of the historical and natural beauty surrounding us.

6. Spiritual connection

A spiritual connection during our visit to Angkor Wat is one of our other reasons to visit Angkor Wat. We feel a spiritual connection when we are in harmony with our surroundings, whether it is the culture, history, or natural beauty of a place that makes us feel this way.

Angkor Wat is a temple that holds a lot of spiritual significance because of its design and symbolism. The temple’s architecture represents the cosmic world in Hindu cosmology, with Mount Meru at the center, which is believed to be the abode of the gods.

As you wander around the temple, you’ll see carvings and sculptures that tell stories from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. These works of art give you an insight into the religious beliefs and tales of ancient Khmer culture.

Our truly spiritual moment was the pockets of peace that we found throughout the temple. Angkor Wat is huge and finding serene spots to simply admire the monument or nature had a calming effect on us.

7. Angkor Thom

If you’re planning a trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia, make sure to add Angkor Thom to your list of must-see places. This ancient city was the last and most important capital of the Khmer Empire and is famous for its incredible architecture and fascinating history.

The South Gate of Angkor Thom is one of the reasons to visit Angkor Wat. The gate is adorned with cool stone faces that grab your attention. Once inside, don’t miss the Bayon Temple, which is famous for its mysterious stone faces that seem to be watching you from every angle.

The Baphuon Temple is another amazing structure that will leave you in awe of the Khmer people’s architectural skills. And, of course, you’ll want to check out the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, which are both interesting.

But it’s not all about the temples and structures. You’ll be surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful landscapes that make Angkor Thom a great place to relax and soak up the atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to learn about Cambodia’s rich history and culture while enjoying some well-deserved downtime.

8. Ta Prohm

Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider and Ta Prohm are one of the many reasons to visit Angkor Wat. Ta Prohm is an awe-inspiring temple located in the Angkor Archaeological Park in Cambodia. It’s a true marvel of ancient architecture and nature’s relentless reclamation.

This temple is often referred to as the “Tomb Raider Temple” because it was featured in the popular movie starring Angelina Jolie. Ta Prohm was built in the 12th century by King Jayavarman VII and was originally dedicated to his mother.

What makes it unique is that it has been left largely in its natural state, with towering trees and massive roots engulfing the temple structures. The intertwining of nature and beautiful architecture creates a hauntingly beautiful scene, making it a must-visit for any traveler.

What we loved about this temple was the mystical ambiance and the striking contrast between the ancient ruins and the surrounding jungle. The best time to visit this temple is either early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and make the most of the magical lighting for photography.

9. Experience the local culture

Do you need more reasons to visit Angkor Wat?

During our travels to Cambodia, we were captivated by the rich and diverse cultural tapestry of this beautiful country. One of the first things that struck us was the warm and welcoming nature of the Cambodian people.

They have a genuine hospitality that makes you feel right at home. Whether you’re exploring the bustling streets of Phnom Penh or the serene temples of Siem Reap, we were met with friendly smiles and helpful gestures.

The heart of Cambodian culture is undoubtedly its ancient temples, with Angkor Wat being the most iconic. On our trip to the temples of Angkor, we witnessed the incredible fusion of Hindu and Buddhist influences. The intricate carvings and stunning architecture of these temples gave us a glimpse into the country’s history and spirituality.

Cambodian cuisine is a treat for the taste buds. Don’t miss the chance to try dishes like Amok (a delicious coconut curry), Lok Lak (marinated beef), and, of course, the famous fish amok. While Psar Chas (Old Market) caters to the mass tourist market, the Angkor Night Market remains the city’s top night market.

The Cambodian culture is also deeply rooted in its traditional arts, including Apsara dance, which is a mesmerizing form of classical dance. Attending a performance is a must to appreciate the grace and storytelling that this art form conveys.

Finally, when visiting Cambodia, it’s important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites and show respect to the locals you meet along your journey.

10. Adventure opportunities

To break the circuit of visiting temples, we recommend other activities in and around Angkor Wat, why not join a quad-bike tour while enjoying Siem Reap’s beautiful countryside? Or, join the sunrise bike tour that takes you to the back trails of Angkor.

For a unique experience, visit Angkor Wat and its surrounding temples in a classic vintage jeep tour and avoid crowds using tuk-tuks and buses. There are plenty of adventurous opportunities around Angkor Wat, though it was not one of our many reasons to visit Angkor Wat.

One of the many towers within Angkor Wat

11. Photographer’s paradise

In the ancient city of Angkor, Angkor Wat stands out as a photographer’s paradise with its intricate architecture and captivating backdrop.

At sunrise or sunset, the temple glows in golden light, enveloping the complex. The play of light and shadows creates a mesmerizing spectacle that is a feast for the eyes.

As you capture the reflection of Angkor Wat in the nearby ponds, you’ll be transported to a magical world that is beyond words. As you venture deeper into the complex, you’ll discover hidden corners and ancient ruins that tell tales of a bygone era.

The temples within the Angkor complex offer unique frames that showcase the rich cultural and historical aspects of Cambodia. Each temple has its own story to tell, and as you explore, you’ll be able to capture these stories through your lens.

To capture the best shots, it’s best to visit Angkor Wat at different times of the day. The soft morning light and the warm tones during the golden hour offer distinct atmospheres that can add variety to your photo collection.

Whether you’re an avid photographer or just someone who appreciates the beauty of the world, Angkor Wat is a place that will leave you spellbound.

12. Conservation efforts

Angkor Wat is not only a stunning architectural marvel but also a site of significant conservation efforts. The complex faces challenges such as weathering, structural instability, and environmental factors, prompting the Cambodian authorities to take measures to preserve this cultural treasure.

One notable initiative involves regular maintenance and restoration work carried out by the Apsara Authority, which oversees the management of Angkor. With teams of over 100 full-time conservation technicians, the knowledge of restoration has now spread to the younger generation.

Additionally, there are efforts to address issues like vegetation overgrowth and water damage. Collaborative projects with international organizations and experts bring diverse perspectives to the conservation table.

The aim is not only to protect the physical structures but also to ensure sustainable tourism that minimizes the impact on this ancient site. By visiting Angkor Wat, you contribute to the conservation efforts of this beautiful temple.

Another entrance to the complex. The calm and peaceful surroundings made the area magical

13. Magical atmosphere

The atmosphere at Angkor Wat is truly magical and awe-inspiring. As we approached the temple complex, we felt a sense of reverence and wonder in the air. Lush greenery surrounds the sprawling temple complex, creating a peaceful and serene environment.

As we entered the temple, we were awed by the intricate carvings and bas-reliefs that adorned its walls. The carvings depict scenes from Hindu mythology and provide a glimpse into the religious beliefs of the Khmer people. The intricate details and precision of the carvings are truly remarkable and left us in awe.

We wandered through the corridors and galleries, the atmosphere was one of tranquility and calmness. The temple’s vast size allowed us to find peaceful solitude within its walls, creating a meditative and an introspective experience.

Watching the sunrise or sunset over the temple complex is an unforgettable experience. The reflection of the temple in the surrounding moat creates a serene and picturesque scene.

The changing colors of the sky, from soft pinks to vibrant oranges and reds, create a magical and ethereal atmosphere. The atmosphere at Angkor Wat is one of reverence, wonder, and tranquility. The temple complex is a true masterpiece and a testament to the Khmer Empire’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Our Verdict

Exploring Angkor Wat is like stepping into a timeless realm where history whispers through ancient stone corridors and magnificent temples. The 13 reasons to visit this UNESCO World Heritage site paint a vivid picture of its allure.

From the mesmerizing sunrise over Angkor Wat itself to the intricate carvings at Bayon, each moment is a journey back in time. The spiritual ambiance of Ta Prohm, entwined with nature, adds a unique charm. Engage with the locals, savoring the vibrant culture and delectable Khmer cuisine. As the sun sets, casting a warm glow on the temples, one can’t help but feel a profound connection to the past.
Phnom Penh, the capital and most populous city in Cambodia is located at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and Bassac river and is home to a population of 2 million people.

The earliest known people inhabited the area during the 5th century. The Choeung Ek Archaeological site contains the remnants of an ancient civilization with a village infrastructure, irrigation, and an ancient brick temple that dates back to the Funan era.

History

This city became the first capital of Cambodia after Ponhea Yat, the last king of the Khmer Empire, and the first king of Cambodia moved the capital from Angkor Thom to Phnom Penh.

The city was then abandoned several times before being re-established as the capital by King Norodom. By the 1920s, the city was often referred to as the “Pearl of Asia” and during the Vietnam War, Cambodia became the base for the Viet Cong and the People’s Liberation Army.

The city began to return to normalcy after the Khmer Rouge was driven out in 1979. With reconstruction and a stable government, new foreign investments began to flood the city together with aid from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

Today, Cambodia has made significant development in improving the health of those in the rural areas, primary education, and early childhood education. While Cambodia has achieved economical and political progress, the nation still grapples with its legacy.

Visa Requirements

Everyone who intends to visit Cambodia must have a visa. This rule applies to everyone except citizens of Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Seychelles, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Thankfully, you can apply for the Cambodian e-visa through the official website Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The online visa platform only caters to Tourist Visa (T) and Ordinary Visa (E).

Alternatively, you can apply for a Cambodian visa on iVisa. Their visa application is simple, fast, and reliable. All documents are submitted to a team of approved immigration experts before submission to respective governments and are less complicated.

How do you get around in Phnom Penh?

The several ways to get around in Phnom Penh include using tuk-tuks, moto, bicycle rentals, ride-share, taxis, and buses. This city is not pedestrian-friendly, so always be prepared when crossing roads or navigating traffic.

Tuk-Tuks

This is the most common form of transportation in Phnom Penh. The larger tuk-tuks are known as remoks and can accommodate 4 persons. These are good for short distances as they are affordable.

Don’t be surprised to see an Indian-made auto rickshaw on the streets of Phnom Penh. These auto-rickshaws are much smaller and lighter than the traditional Cambodian tuk-tuk.

Travel Tip:

Always confirm your fare and destination before boarding any of these tuk-tuks. If you are boarding after 10 pm, you can expect heavily inflated prices. Also, make sure to always have small changes with you when traveling on tuk-tuks as the drivers may not have small changes.

Moto

A second way to get around Phnom Penh is by using a moto or motorbike taxi. However, at night, this may not be your safest option as it is common for drivers to be drinking when taking passengers back to their hotels.

Also, most of these drivers do not speak English and may not know the way to your destination, although they claim to know the way around Phnom Penh.

Ride-share

This is the latest addition to Phnom Penh’s public transportation. There are several options when it comes to ride-share as there are three players in the Cambodian market. These are Grab, PassApp, and WeGo.

Taxis

Private taxis can be arranged from your hotel and you probably can find many around the city. Do note that the rates are expensive. Although shared taxis may be cheaper, it is best to hire a private car through your travel agent in Phnom Penh for a comfortable ride.

Buses

Phnom Penh welcomed its first bus service with 11 lines that run throughout the city. The fare is fixed at KHR 1,500 ($0.38) regardless of distance. To make your traveling on the local bus easier, download the Stops Near Me App from Google Playstore.

How many days do you need in Phnom Penh?

Ideally, you would need 2 days in Phnom Penh. Why?

Although Phnom Penh is the largest city in Cambodia, it is ranked 13th in terms of the estimated population. The city is also much smaller and is easy to get around.

Day 1: Royal Palace Complex

On Day 1of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary, we explore Phnom Penh’s royal palace complexes, the founding temple of Phnom Penh as well as the two iconic landmarks in Phnom Penh, the Independence Monument and the Statue of King Father Norodom.

Royal Palace

Photo by René DeAnda on Unsplash

The first of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was the Royal Palace of Cambodia Complex. This complex was built upon an old citadel named Banteay Keo and is divided into four main compounds.

The official residence of the King of Cambodia is Khemarin Palace which is within these compounds and is separated by a wall. The entrance is located on the west of the Throne Hall. The official residence is off-limits to the public.

What we loved about the Royal Palace of Cambodia Complex is that we only paid an entrance fee of $6.50 which allowed us to walk the well-manicured and beautiful grounds of the Royal Palace, the Throne Hall, the Silver Pagoda, and the Moonlight Pavillion.

A tour guide will set you back by another $10 which we did not take. You can expect to be disappointed if you expect the royal palace complex to be as grand as that in Bangkok.

Does the King of Cambodia live in the Royal Palace?

Yes, the current King of Cambodia, King Norodom Sihamoni lives in Khemarin Palace within the Royal Palace Complex. The king is in residence if you notice a flag is up. The palace is topped by a single golden prang.

Throne Hall

The second of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was the Throne Hall or Preah Tineang Tevea Vinnichay Mohai Moha Prasat translates to the “sacred seat of judgment”. This is where the king and officials carry out their duties in running and managing the country.

The Throne Hall is distinctively marked by three spires with the highest having the white four-faced head of Brahma. Inside the Throne Hall, you will see three thrones, one western-style and two traditional-styled thrones.

The ancient nine-level throne can be seen. This throne is used during the king’s coronation while he is dressed in Royal Regalia. You can spot this throne as it is topped with a nine-tiered umbrella which symbolizes the universal powers of the king.

Silver Pagoda

Photo by Olaf Tausch on Wikipedia Commons

The third of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was the Silver Pagoda. This structure is also known as the Temple of the Emerald Crystal Buddha. The image above is the stupa in which the remains of King Norodom Suramarit are interred.

This ornate structure was once a wooden building. It was rebuilt and decorated with jewels and silver. The name Silver Pagoda is derived from the fact that the floor is covered with 5,329 silver pieces which weigh a whopping 1,125 kilograms.

Although most of its contents were damaged and pillaged during the Khmer Rouge era, this is the only temple to have survived under the Khmer Rouge.

Who built the Silver Pagoda?

The Silver Pagoda was built by King Norodom Sihanouk whose ashes are interred at another stupa near the Silver Pagoda.

Moonlight Pavilion

Photo by Fumihiko Ueno on Wikipedia Commons

The fourth of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was the Moonlight Pavilion. This open-air pavilion is one of the most notable within the complex and was built for the king to view the parades.

The pavilion was also used as a platform for the Royal Dancers and as a place where the king addresses the crowd. State banquets are also held in this pavilion. The current structure was built to replace an earlier pavilion built by King Sisowath.

Wat Phnom

Photo by Leng Chan on Unsplash

The fifth of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was Wat Phnom. This place is about 1.3-miles or a 10-minute drive from the Royal Palace Complex. Wat Phnom is built on the only hill in Phnom Penh.

According to local legend, a lady named Daun Penh lived near the banks of the confluence of four rivers. One day, she saw a floating Koki tree and with the help of the villagers, she took the piece of wood, scraped it, and found five statues made of bronze.

The first four statues were statues of Buddha while the last statue was Vishnu holding a staff, a snail, and a lotus flower. The villagers soon built a temporary shrine on a raised platform and named it Phnom Penh or “Penh’s Hill” in her honor.

Who built Wat Phnom?

Wat Phnom was built by Daun Penh to house the statues she had found from the bark of a floating Koki Tree.

How tall is Wat Phnom?

Wat Phnom is 46 meters or 150 feet in height.

How much is the entrance fee to Wat Phnom?

The entrance fee to Wat Phnom is $1 and $2 for the on-site museum. The temple is open every day from 7.30 am to 6.30 pm.

Independence Monument

Photo by Daniel Bernard on Unsplash

The sixth of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was visiting the Independence Monument. This monument is at the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard in Phnom Penh’s city center.

The stupa structure was inspired by Banteay Srei, the “jewel of Khmer architecture”. The monument was built as a dedication to those brave hearts who perished during the war towards Cambodia’s independence.

At night, this monument illuminates in red, blue, and white which are the colors of Cambodia’s flag. On the east of the monument, there is a park that fills with locals in their daily activities.

Statue of King Father Norodom Sihanouk

The seventh of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was visiting the statue of King Father Norodom Sihanouk. This statue is diagonally opposite and is a short walk from the Independence Monument.

This statue was built and dedicated to King Sihanouk’s relentless drive-in liberating the country from French colonialism. He served in multiple roles as Cambodia’s King, Head of State, and Prime Minister.

He became the King of Cambodia in 1941 and is recognized as a leader who set the path toward Cambodia’s independence from France. Although he was fond of Western culture, he was determined to see Cambodia become a free and independent nation.

Does Cambodia have a royal family?

Yes, Cambodia does have a royal family. The current lineage is from the House of Norodom. The earliest known ruler was Queen Soma who was the ruler of the Kingdom of Funan and is regarded as the first monarch of Cambodia.

Day 2: A Trip Into Phnom Penh’s Past

On Day 2 of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary, we explored Phnom Penh’s past by visiting the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, and the National Museum of Cambodia.

After taking in all that somber history, we ended our day at Sisowath Quay where we relaxed as we watched the boats pass by. This is the best place to see how the locals end their day.

The eighth of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. This secondary school was the site of Khmer Rouge’s Security Prison 21, hence the term S-21.

The prisoners here were repeatedly tortured and coerced into naming their family members and close associates, who would then be captured and tortured. The prisoners in this facility were government officials, doctors, academics, monks, and engineers.

There are four main buildings on-site, Buildings A, B, C, and D with Building B holding the black and white photographs of those who passed through the camp. Building D houses the torture memorabilia while Building C holds the prisoner cells.

What happened in Tuol Sleng?

Tuol Sleng is the Security Prison 21 where an estimated 20,000 people were imprisoned, tortured, and executed by the Khmer Rouge between 1975 to 1979. The museum continues to be an educational and memorial site for Cambodians.

Who survived S-21?

The survivors of S-21 were Bou Meng who survived by producing propaganda paintings for the Khmer Rouge, and Chum Mey who survived by repairing sewing machines for Pol Pot’s soldiers.

Chim Meth survived by emphasizing her provincial accent as she was from the same district as the Chief Prison Officer. Another survivor, Vann Nath survived because he knew how to paint.

The ninth of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was the National Museum of Cambodia. This museum is about 2-miles or a 10-minute drive from the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum of Cambodia.

This is the largest museum in Cambodia with about 14,000 artifacts dating from pre-historic to present-day Cambodia. The museum is a short 5-minute walk from the Royal Palace Complex.

The statue in the gazebo in the courtyard is that of the Leper King. This is the original statue of the Terrace of Leper King in Siem Reap. The current statue placed in Siem Reap is a replica.

Among the must-see artifacts are the seated statue of King Jayavarman VII with his head slightly bowed which was found at Angkor Thom, a giant pair of wrestling monkeys from Koh Ker, and a reclining bronze Buddha statue from the West Mebon in Angkor.

How much is the entry fee to the National Museum of Cambodia?

The entry fee is $5 for foreigners aged between 10 to 17 years, and $10 for those 18 years and above. English, Spanish, French, and Japanese-speaking guides are available for $6. Audio guides that are available in 8 languages are $5 per person.

The tenth of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was Choeung Ek Genocidal Center. This center is about 12-miles or a 35-minute drive from the National Museum of Cambodia.

This is the site of the Killing Fields where the Khmer Rouge regime killed and buried more than a million people between 1975 to 1979. The atmosphere here is somber and grim as we walked through the green fields that contain the smashed bones of those killed.

A Buddhist stupa with acrylic glass walls that contain the skulls of at least 8,000 persons was built as a memorial to the victims who perished. The mass graves are visible and it is not uncommon to find a bone scattered on the surface.

Visitors are requested to contact or notify the memorial park officer if they find any bones or teeth. As there is an area where children were beaten to death, it is not advisable to bring children below the age of 12 years here.

How many people are buried in the killing fields?

Is Killing Fields a true story?

Yes, the Killing Fields is a true story of two journalists, Sydney Schanberg and Dith Pran who cover the fighting between the fighting and Khmer Rouge forces. Although both have the opportunity to flee, both stay behind.

The first half of the movie explore’s Sydney’s guilt for putting Pran’s life in danger while the second half of the film sees Pran surviving the brutality of the Khmer Rouge.

The eleventh of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was a visit to Central Market or Phsar Thum Thmei which translates to “New Grand Market”. This market is about 11 miles or a 40-minute drive from the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center.

When the market was completed in 1937, it was the largest in Asia, and today, its 26-meter central dome is one of the most photographed areas of the market. If you are planning to buy kramas, souvenirs, electrical items, and sarongs, this is the place to be.

Avid photographers would love the fresh market section which has a vibrant display of fruits, vegetables, and fresh seafood.

The twelfth and last of our 2 days in Phnom Penh itinerary was watching the sunset at Sisowath Quay. This 1.8-mile stretch of riverfront strip is lined with restaurants, bars, cafes, and local vendors selling street food and souvenirs.

Once you are at the riverfront, make your way to the FCC Phnom Penh Boutique Hotel which is a three-story Art Deco landmark in Phnom Penh.

In our guide, we chose the three best places to stay in Phnom Penh for first-timers, for nightlife, and those with families. These are our favorite hotels as each stay was memorable and left us feeling positively happy.

What is traditional Cambodian food?

These are five traditional Cambodian food that you can find all over Phnom Penh and Cambodia as a whole. Be sure to include these must-eats in your trip to Phnom Penh.

Samlar Machu

Photo by Saphabodi on Wikipedia Commons

The first must-eat in Cambodia is samlar machu or “sour soup” in Khmer. While the base ingredient of this dish is tamarind, there are several variations where tomatoes, pineapples, and celery are used to flavor the soup.

The other types of samlar machu include samlar machu yuon which is made with lobster, fish or chicken, pineapple, dried fish, and tomatoes. If it is made with fresh and dried fish, crab, and green papaya, it is samlar machu srae.

Num Banchok

Photo by Thomas Wanhoff on Wikipedia Commons

The second must-eat when in Cambodia is num banchok. This lightly-fermented noodle dish is usually served at breakfast. A popular Khmer folklore is associated with this dish.

The story goes that there was once an influential scholar named Thonchey who was exiled to China by a Khmer king. In China, the scholar began making num banchok to sustain his living.

As the dish gained popularity, the Chinese emperor called Thonchey to the palace to prepare the dish for him. While the emperor ate the dish, Thonchey sneaked in to peek at the emperor and promptly insulted him, only to be thrown in jail later on.

Thonchey was eventually released and was returned to the Khmer Empire. In recent years, the Ministry of Tourism is seeking to include this dish in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

Amok Trei (Fish Amok)

Photo by Marcin Konsek on Wikipedia Commons

The third must-eat when in Cambodia is fish amok. With a mousse-like consistency, this steamed fish dish is one of Cambodia’s oldest dishes that was once only served to the royals of the Khmer Empire.

Only three types of fish are used for this dish, the goby fish, the snakehead fish, or catfish. The dish is served with a side of steamed rice and is always served on a banana leaf or coconut shell.

Loklak Sach Koo (Beef Lok Lak)

Photo by Marcin Konsek on Wikipedia Commons

The fourth must-eat in Cambodia is lok lak sach kor or beef loklak is a French-inspired Cambodian dish that is made by stir-frying bite-sized beef with cucumbers, and lettuce, tomatoes, pepper, and soy sauce.

This dish is one of Cambodia’s national dishes and was mostly served at formal events such as weddings and anniversaries. This was because beef was considered a luxury that many could not afford to eat.

The closest relative of this dish is Peru’s lomo saltado which is cooked and served in a similar style.

Num Pang Cheng (Spring Onion Pancake)

Photo by Howard61313 on Wikipedia Commons

The fifth must-eat in Cambodia is num pang cheng or “Chinese bread”. This is the Cambodian version of the popular scallion pancakes that are found in China, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

These pancakes can be served either as a main dish or a side dish which is made from dough, scallions, fennel, and sesame seeds.

What is the best time to go to Cambodia?

The best time to visit Cambodia is between November to May which is during the dry season. While Cambodia has hot and humid weather all year round, the country has two seasons which are the monsoon season and dry season.

The wet monsoon season is from June to October and while the rain may damper your plans, traveling during this period means fewer crowds and cheaper accommodation.

Can you use US Dollars in Cambodia?

Yes, you can use US Dollars in Cambodia. Cambodia has an unofficial dual currency system with US Dollars being widely accepted and pegged at 4000 Riel to 1 USD. The official currency in Cambodia is Riel (៛).

In rural areas, Riel is widely used while in the major cities of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanouk, both US Dollars and Riels are accepted as legal tender.

However, the Central Bank of Cambodia plans to reduce the dependency on US Dollars and encourage the use of Riel and the local digital currency, Bakong.

Is Phnom Penh worth visiting?

It’s a YES from us. Why?

Dark Tourism. I mean, who wants to go on a holiday to see something depressing? However, Phnom Penh’s past is tightly connected to Pol Pot and his atrocities. Visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Choeung Ek Genocide Center and pay your respects to the 3 million people killed for being educated.

Historical buildings. When Cambodia came under French rule, the legacies the French left included Baguette and the beautiful buildings that dot the city. Look out for the French-inspired Central Post Office, the National Library of Cambodia, and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications next to Hotel Le Royal.

Massages. If you are looking for the best value massages, Phnom Penh’s the place to get one. While spa massages can set you back by $100 in Bangkok or Siem Reap, you can easily get a full-body aromatherapy massage for $55 in Phnom Penh.

Walks by the waterfront. After a day of sightseeing and a good foot massage, head to Sisowath Quay to relax and unwind. The atmosphere at the riverside is friendly, and relaxed, and has plenty of smiles. A perfect end to the day, don’t you think?

Cuisine. While Cambodia’s cuisine is nowhere near Thai or Vietnamese in terms of international status, there are several must-eats when in Phnom Penh. From street-cart-lined streets to fine-dining and the unique street foods (fried tarantula’s, anyone?), Phnom Penh is a foodie’s delight.

Phnom Penh is the place to be to experience Cambodia’s local vibe, culture, and food. While not as famous as Bangkok or Hanoi, Phnom Penh’s charm lies in its simplicity, the resilience of its people, and its blend of modern and ancient living in harmony.

How about 3 days in Siem Reap? I asked my husband.

This was our first trip to Cambodia. I had always wanted to visit the majestic temples of Angkor and visit some off-the-beaten-path temples.

Siem Reap is “the Gateway to Angkor” and is Cambodia’s second-largest city. Now, just to be clear, Siem Reap isn’t all temples, and believe me when we say, you can get “templed out”.

Having heard so much about Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm, it was natural that we booked our flight to Siem Reap. Although travel guides will tell you to avoid visiting Siem Reap during the monsoon season, we threw caution to the wind and rain.

And, traveled during the monsoon season.

Let’s just say, that after seeing all the temples, we didn’t want to see another temple again, even when we were back home in Kuala Lumpur.

On this trip, we mixed temples, a hidden gem temple, and the great lake of Tonle Sap. At the end of the trip, we loved Cambodia even more and can’t wait to return to the country.

Siem Reap sits on the Tonle Sap’s banks, nestled in Cambodia’s northwest region. The city is known for its French Colonial and Chinese-style architecture, especially around the Old Market and the Old French Quarter areas of the city.

Siem Reap is a city that retains its lush tropical landscape where paddy fields stretch as far as the eye can see. The city gained popularity with the rediscovery of Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that contains the ruins of the Khmer Empire.

Siem Reap experiences a tropical wet and dry climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. The wet season is typically from May to October with rainfall in the afternoon, if not throughout the day.

We visited in September and it only rained in the afternoons. The rain breathed life into the already green surroundings, transforming Siem Reap into a garden paradise. Angkor Wat is an ethereal beauty as rainwater gently cascades down the facade of the temple.

The dry season is from November to April with the weather becoming drier and warmer with clear blue skies and refreshing breeze. This is the best time to visit the beautiful temples of Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, and Bayon.

Siem Reap always beckons explorers from all corners of the world. With its rich history, friendly locals, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a trip here is unforgettable. We wanted to plan another trip here once we returned home.

That is what Siem Reap did to us. And, we needed more than 3 days in Siem Reap. We will be planning a longer trip soon.

Siem Reap, a magnificent city located in the heart of Cambodia, is renowned for its fascinating history that is intricately intertwined with the Khmer Empire and the legendary Angkor Archaeological Park.

From its humble beginnings as a small village, Siem Reap underwent a remarkable transformation during the French colonial era, blossoming into the bustling metropolis that we know today.

Siem Reap, located in the northwestern part of Cambodia, is an enchanting city that attracts travelers from all over the world. The city’s main attraction is the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that features the magnificent temples of Angkor.

These ancient structures, built between the 9th and 12th centuries, are a testament to the artistic and architectural skills of the Khmer Empire. Apart from the temples, Siem Reap has a lot to offer visitors.

The city is home to a vibrant local culture, rich in history, art, and traditions. The streets are filled with colorful markets, shops, and restaurants, where visitors can sample local delicacies and interact with friendly locals.

There are also several museums and art galleries that showcase the city’s history and artistic heritage. Overall, Siem Reap is a fascinating destination that is perfect for anyone seeking adventure, culture, and a unique travel experience.

How To Spend 3 Days In Siem Reap?

When we planned this trip, we wanted it to be a combination of must-visits and an off-the-beaten-path temple which a friend of ours recommended. We hit the ground running (literally!) as we made our way to Angkor Thom, Prasat Bayon, and Angkor Wat on the day we arrived in Siem Reap.

This itinerary is hectic (even for us!) as we wanted to explore as many places within a short period. Hence, if time is not an issue, we recommend visiting at least two temples a day.

Also, combine your trip with a trip to Tonle Sap. Our visit to Tonle Sap was a refreshing change after all the temples we visited.

We were templed out by the end of our trip. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our stay as much as we enjoyed the local food which we had on our third day. We hope you enjoy our itinerary as much as we enjoyed this trip ourselves.

If you don’t have 3 days in Siem Reap, you can use this same itinerary for 2 days in Siem Reap itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival, Angkor Thom & Bayon

Since this was our first trip to Siem Reap, we wanted to make the most of it. Our 3 days in Siem Reap were packed and this is something we would recommend in the future. We always left early and returned after dinner. Exhausting, to say the least!

Arrival

Our Air Asia flight to Siem Reap

We arrived at a cloudy start at the Siem Reap International Airport. This airport is small compared to other international airports in the region. Since there are no air bridges, we made the short walk to the main terminal.

At the main terminal, we were greeted by smiling and friendly staff who guided us to the immigration checkpoint. Our arrival process was smooth and we were out within 30 minutes. Our driver was already waiting for us to take us to the first stop of our whirlwind trip.

We began our Siem Reap 3 day itinerary with a visit to Angkor Thom which was already crowded by the time we reached the South Gate.

Angkor Thom

Two of the 54 stone figures that adorn the South Gate of Angkor Thom

Our first stop in our 3 days in Siem Reap was Angkor Thom. Angkor Thom is described as an urban marvel and was one of the most impressive royal cities during the Angkor Period.

We started at the South Gate which was flanked by 54 stone figures on each side. These 108 figures represent the gods and demons pulling a naga in a tug-of-war. The gods were calm and serene while the demons grimaced in military headdresses.

This scene represents the Churning of the Milk which is taken from Vishnu Purana, Bhagwat Purana, and the Mahabharat. The myth tells us that in the end, the gods obtained immortality after drinking the divine nectar that came out from the churning of the ocean.

The most notable temples within Angkor Thom are Prasat Bayon, Baphuon, Phimenakas, the Terrace of Leper King, and the Terrace of the Elephants.

Prasat Bayon

The many faces of Bayon

Our next temple in our 3 days in Siem Reap was Prasat Bayon. This temple stands at the center of the Angkor Thom. Among all the temples in Siem Reap, Bayon stands out for its unique architecture and its “temple of faces” feature.

Since we visited in the late afternoon, Bayon was already crowded. Thus, we recommend visiting this temple early in the morning. Watch the sunrise without the crowds as the temple is open from 5.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

Since we had time, our next temple on our 3 days in Siem Reap itinerary was the Prasat Bayon which is famous for its many faces.

One of the many beautiful faces at Bayon

Prasat Bayon was built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII with the central tower rising above the others. This is the only temple that was built to worship Buddhist deities with 216 massive stone faces.

Some believe the stone faces are that of Jayavarman himself or a representation of Avalokiteshvara. As we walked among the many faces, we came to the outer gallery which depicted scenes from everyday life and historical events in the empire.

This is one of the long passageways at Bayon Temple

However, what we found striking was the fact that Bayon was designed as a mandala. A mandala is a configuration of symbols used as a focusing tool for spiritual practice. This temple is the heart which represents Mount Meru.

Exploring Bayon is like stepping into a mystical world frozen in time. The play of light and shadow on the temple’s stones throughout the day adds to its mystical allure. As we wandered through its corridors and ascended its steep staircases, we were transported to a different era. An era where the Khmer Empire reigned supreme.

Terrace of the Elephants

One of the better-preserved elephants at the Terrace of the Elephants

Our next stop on day 1 of our 3 days in Siem Reap was the Terrace of the Elephants. We walked for about 15 minutes and passed through Baphuon, an ancient temple that was built during the 11th century. Baphuon is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was later converted to a Buddhist temple.

The walk to the terrace was quick and enjoyable. On the way, we saw several stalls where we could stop and drink refreshing coconut water before turning towards the Terrace of the Elephants.

When we arrived, we were amazed by the stunning view. The Terrace of the Elephants was originally built as a viewing platform for King Jayavarman VII to see his victorious returning army. It also served as a base for the king’s grand audience hall.

The length of the terrace is decorated with near-life-sized carvings of elephants, their Khmer mahouts, garudas, and lions. The intricate carvings are incredibly detailed, and we were in awe at how realistic they looked.

We took a photo at the smaller staircases of the terrace, where we could see the magnificent elephants, representing Airavata, the mythical three-headed elephants on either side of the staircase. It was truly a breathtaking sight.

Angkor Wat

Entrance from the Western Gopura

Our last stop for the day in our 3 days in Siem Reap was Angkor Wat which was an 11-minute drive from the Terrace of the Elephants. We entered through the Western Gopura which is the most beautiful entrance to the temple.

We walked on the Rainbow Bridge although it is more of a causeway than a bridge. This sandstone bridge is the original path the Khmers used in the past to get to Angkor Wat. We could only imagine how lively it was back then.

The Western Entrance is surrounded by a moat representing the ocean with Angkor Wat temple representing Mount Meru. As we walked on the uneven path under the scorching heat, we could only imagine what Angkor was like in its prime.

There are five entrances at the Western Gopura with the center Gopura aligning to the grand causeway leading to the temple proper. The Gopura features ornate bas-reliefs and patterns with false doors and Apsara carvings.

After walking through the ornate passageway, we reached the main statue which is believed to be Lord Vishnu which was originally placed at the central shrine on the third level of Angkor Wat.

Another entrance to the outer galleries of Angkor Wat

As we walked past the northern and southern libraries and the reflecting ponds, we saw that the other entrances were equally beautiful with intricate carvings. We reached the Terrace of Honor and were in the outer galleries.

The highlights of the outer galleries were the bas reliefs on the churning of the Sea of Milk gallery, the Battle of Lanka gallery, and the war between the Devas and Asuras gallery. However, among the three, it was the churning of the sea of milk gallery that was most beautiful.

The passageway of the outer galleries of Angkor Wat

The intricate designs and the carvings were well preserved and tell the story of an important event in Hindu mythology. We recommend reading about the mythology to understand the carvings better.

As this was our last sightseeing for the day, we gradually made our way to the central tower that stands on a raised terrace. While the two inner galleries have towers facing the ordinal directions, the outer galleries have pavilions at the corners.

We soon made our way up to the third level with restricted access. While climbing up the steep staircase, the view at the top was breathtaking. We had clear views of the lush greenery and a panoramic view of the temple and its surroundings.

<img decoding="async" src="https://lh7-us.googleusercontent.com/RTSaWiYZLW8mmkzo111CZYXvm-VetSmuOmtFZVSmKg7ZG7SIX-VfWn5X-0X_4q_uqEp7uLUbes6RkOElRV9g2BCB4fxjjcaxTz51mkg4Uci2VH5tgvfPnbWGd_AiA_d8NdWwR90HOX_Cqrd6WALwgBY" alt="3 days in Angkor Wat.

To end our trip to this beautiful temple, we went to the reflecting ponds. While this area is crowded during the early mornings, there was no crowd when we took this photo. It was almost 4 pm and despite the cloudy skies, we were happy to get a stunning photo.

Day 2: Banteay Srei, Koh Ker, Beng Melea & Tonle Sap

On Day 2 of our 3 days in Siem Reap, we chose to go off the beaten path and explore some lesser-known temples. We combined Banteay Srei, Koh Ker, Prasat Neang Khmau, and Beng Melea, and ended our day with lunch on the banks of Tonle Sap.

Banteay Srei

The entrance to the Banteay Srei temple complex

About 22 miles from Siem Reap, was our first stop, the Banteay Srei temple. The drive to this temple was scenic as we passed through paddy fields and villages. This 10th-century temple was built entirely from red sandstone. However, it is the intricate designs that adorn this temple that made our trip here memorable.

The entrance ticket to Banteay Srei is included in the Angkor Temple pass for the main Angkor temples. Hence, you could combine a Banteay Srei and Banteay Samre which is pretty peaceful and away from the crowds.

Banteay Srei is far from Angkor Wat in terms of size. However, while it lacks in size, it is abundant in intricate carvings. Which is how it got its nickname, the “citadel of women” or the ‘citadel of beauty’.

The nicknames came because the carvings were so beautiful that they could have only been done by womenfolk. And, combined with the red sandstone’s pink hue added to this speculation.

Unlike other temples around Angkor, we found it unique that Banteay Srei was built by two courtiers, Vishnukumara and Yajnavaraha. Yajnavaraha was a scholar and philanthropist who helped those who suffered from injustice, suffering, illness, and poverty.

As the temple was small, we spent 30 minutes there and made our way to our next temple, Koh Ker.

Koh Ker

The only seven-tiered pyramid structure in Southeast East Asia, Koh Ker

After driving for 2 hours and covering 66 miles, we arrived at our next destination, highly recommended by a friend. It was Koh Ker. Koh Ker was recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site, a recognition it deserves.

When we arrived at Koh Ker, it was empty. After paying an entrance fee of $15, we took our time and walked towards the main temple complex. While the temple originally had 180 temples, there are about 2 dozen ruins that can be visited by tourists.

We loved the fact that we were the only tourists there at that time. As the area was filled with landmines, we were advised to stay within the cleared routes. Koh Ker was once the former capital of the Khmer Empire with inscriptions mentioning its name as Lingapura (“City of Lingams) and Chok Gargyar (“Iron Tree Forest”).

The iconic landmark here is the seven-tiered pyramid known as Prang which was probably the state temple at this site. Inscriptions mention that there was once the largest and most beautiful Shiva-Lingam here.

On the northern side of the pyramid, there is an ancient staircase which is in bad condition. A newer bamboo ladder is also in bad shape. Hence, climbing these stairs is forbidden.

A newer modern steel staircase at the back allows visitors to climb to the top. From here, we can admire the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As we made our way out, we saw many other temples.

Some were in ruins while some seemed remarkably preserved. This is why we stopped at our next destination, Prasat Neang Khmau.

The third of the second day of our 3 days in Siem Reap was Prasat Neang Khmau or “the Black Lady” as she is locally known. This lone temple was made from a sandstone base and surrounded by a laterite wall.

This temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva and a large Shivling stands at the center of the inner sanctum. However, only its base remains today. This was on our list as it is one of the popular temples within Koh Ker.

The black outer surface may have been the result of a large fire that engulfed the area. Another story mentions that the black surface is that the temple was originally dedicated to Goddess Kali, the Hindu Goddess of Destruction.

Our guide explained that the black color was the result of the oxidizing of the iron content used to construct this temple. While parts of the temple were bare, the base and pillars were beautifully decorated with carvings.

We spent about 15 minutes here. There is no entrance fee to visit this temple and with another one more temple to visit. It was time to head to our next destination, Beng Melea.

Beng Melea

<img decoding="async" src="https://lh7-us.googleusercontent.com/xeqmfkODuScRQydWEjjmzaQu9ZCKc024cgc9CQzw343AfaLi_J5m0bg9eFeOqv6uz97qBkJKt08jMVVDqSYMm6DDStR9pBuhPrgBtGMWIVVrV09weGq45AkH15KldLO-nNuDZDt6pDZJT-6JNX32m5Q" alt="3 days in Siem Reap.

The fourth of the second day of our 3 days in Siem Reap was Beng Melea. This temple is about 37 miles or an hour’s drive from Koh Ker. This jungle temple was built along an ancient highway to Preah Khan.

Since January 2020, Beng Melea has been included in the Angkor Temple Pass. To make the most of your time, we recommend taking the Banteay Srei, Koh Ker, and Beng Melea small group temple tour.

When we arrived here, local kids were playing near the entrance of the temple. Due to the remote location of Beng Melea, the temple was not crowded. The temple ruins were bursting at their seams with the roots of trees and creepers.

No one knows the history of the temple and why it was built. What we know of the temple is traced back to its architectural style which is identical to Angkor Wat. As we walked on the wooden pathway, the thick jungle growth was a relief as it kept us cool.

Beng Melea is an authentic jungle experience

We visited the temple close to noon and it was already buzzing with activity. The wide open spaces meant that we had pockets of peace. This meant that we could simply sit back and relax, as we covered the length and breadth of the temple.

Our last agenda on day 2 of our 3 days in Siem Reap was spending time at Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. As we arrived at Tonle Sap, we were amazed by the expansive body of water that transforms with the ebb and flow of the Mekong River.

During the wet season, Tonle Sap expands to nearly five times its dry season size, creating an intricate system of interconnected rivers and flooded forests that will leave you in awe.

The lake is a vital ecosystem, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The floating villages that dot its shores are a testament to the resourcefulness of the local communities that have adapted to the ever-changing water levels.

As our driver navigated the waterways, we saw stilted houses, floating markets, and schools. This was a unique and immersive experience that stayed with us forever. The biodiversity in and around Tonle Sap is awe-inspiring.

The lake serves as a crucial breeding ground for various fish species, sustaining the livelihoods of countless fishermen. Birdwatchers will delight in the migratory birds that flock to the lake, including pelicans, storks, and ibises.

If you want to experience the unique way of life of the locals, don’t miss the iconic floating villages like Kampong Phluk or Chong Khneas.
Day 3: Ta Prohm, Roluos Group of Temples & Apsara Dance

Ta Prohm

One of the many beautiful roots that have taken over the temple

Our first temple on day 3 of our 3 days in Siem Reap was Ta Prohm. Ta Prohm is a 20-minute drive from Angkor Wat and is part of the “big three” temples with Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom being the other two.

With our Angkor Wat Admission Ticket, entry to Ta Prohm is included in the Angkor Pass. The temple is open from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm. We entered through the Western Gate although traditionally, the Eastern Gate was the main entry point.

Thankfully, there were many suggested walking routes with the main highlights being the entry from the Western Gate with its beautiful smiling faces, the trees with their reptile-like roots that take over the temples, and the bas reliefs near the doorways.

Many stalls sold souvenirs, food and drinks, and shirts at both gates. Ta Prohm was built in the 12th century and was founded as a Buddhist monastery and center of learning.

As we walked through the temple, we came across an iconic photo spot with a long queue. With roots framing the doorway, we could see why. This was also where the famous scene from Angelina Jolie’s, Lara Croft movie was filmed.

As we walked through the vast area, we easily spent an hour there. The temple of Ta Prohm, shrouded in dense jungle, has an ethereal appearance and creates a romantic atmosphere.

Gigantic fig, banyan, and kapok trees spread their roots over stones, separating walls and terraces, while their branches and leaves intertwine to form a roof over the structures. The trunks of trees twist among the stone pillars.

The strange, haunted charm of the place entwines itself about you as you go. Just as the roots have wound themselves about the walls and towers.

Roluos Group of Temples

Two of the four brick temples of Lolei at the Roluos group of temples

Our last temple in our 3 days in Siem Reap was the Roluos temple which is about 8 miles from Siem Reap. We arrived here early in the morning which meant that we were the only tourists here.

However, unlike other temples, the Roluos temples are open compared to the other temples within the Angkor Archaeological Park. The temple is open from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm and the entrance is included in the Angkor Pass ticket.

Now, this site is historically important as this was the first capital of the Khmer Empire north of Tonle Sap. There are three major temples Bakong, Lolei, and Preah Ko. This ancient capital was known as Hariharalaya with the temples dating back to the 9th century.

Among the three temples, Bakong was the most impressive. The Bakong temple looks like a stepped pyramid and at a glance, it resembles Candi Borobudur in Java, Indonesia. The Lolei temple was built and dedicated to Lord Shiva and the members of the royal temple.

Lolei is unique in that it consists of four brick towers grouped on a terrace. King Yasovarman I built these temples for his parents and grandparents. The last temple is Preah Ko which means the “sacred bull”.

Preah Ko got its name from the three sandstone statues facing the temple’s central towers. These statues represent Nandi, the mount of Lord Shiva. Preah Ko and Lolei are similar in that they were built for the ancestors of the ruling king of the Khmer Empire at that time.

We spent a relaxing one hour here, walking among the ruins of an ancient capital older than Angkor Wat. Being in a historical place has a way of transporting you back in time.

Artisan Angkor

A close-up of the carving of Lord Ganesh at Artisan Angkor

Our fourth activity of the day was to visit the captivating Artisan Angkor workshop situated in the heart of Siem Reap, Cambodia. This workshop is a true testament to the rich cultural heritage and skilled craftsmanship of the Khmer people.

As we leisurely strolled through its elaborately designed corridors, we were mesmerized by the talented artisans, who were meticulously creating traditional Cambodian art and handicrafts.

The workshops at Artisan Angkor provide a unique and immersive experience into the fascinating world of Khmer craftsmanship. Witnessing the creation of exquisitely crafted silk fabrics, delicate stone carvings, and intricate woodwork was a truly remarkable experience.

The dedication and precision displayed by the artisans are truly commendable, as each piece is a masterpiece that tells a story of Cambodia’s cultural richness. In addition to the workshops, Artisan Angkor also features a stunning showroom where visitors can purchase these finely crafted creations.

The range of souvenirs available, from silk scarves adorned with traditional motifs to intricately carved stone sculptures, is impressive and allows you to take home a piece of Cambodia’s cultural legacy.

For a truly enriching experience, we highly recommend engaging with the artisans, learning about their craft, and even trying your hand at some traditional techniques. This not only adds a personal touch to your visit but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the remarkable artistry involved.

On our final night in Siem Reap, we had the pleasure of experiencing the enchanting Apsara dance performance. This traditional dance form is deeply rooted in Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage and is known for its mesmerizing and captivating movements.

The dance is often performed at significant ceremonies and celebrations, showcasing the beauty and grace of Cambodian artistry. The female performers, donned in intricate and traditional costumes, elegantly move to the rhythm of the music.

Their subtle yet intricate hand gestures and movements convey stories and emotions, leaving the audience spellbound. The Apsara dance draws its inspiration from Hindu mythology, depicting celestial maidens or nymphs known as Apsaras.

The performers embody the grace and beauty of these celestial beings, captivating the audience with their movements and expressions. The Apsara dance is a true testament to Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage and is a must-see for anyone visiting the country.

One of the distinctive features of the Apsara dance is the elaborate headdresses worn by the performers, adorned with ornate jewelry and accessories. The dance is accompanied by traditional Cambodian music, creating a harmonious and enchanting performance.

To witness the Apsara dance in its true cultural context, consider visiting the splendid Angkor Wat in Siem Reap. Many restaurants and cultural venues in the area offer Apsara dance performances as part of the dining experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of this ancient art form while enjoying delicious Cambodian cuisine.

During breakfast, the hotel’s dining areas can get busy, creating a lively atmosphere that adds to the hotel’s charm. However, the hotel’s iconic status means that it can experience a rush during peak hours.

There have also been some concerns about the Wi-Fi’s speed and reliability, making it a little less seamless for guests who rely on connectivity. However, improvements in this aspect would undoubtedly enhance the overall guest experience.

Despite these minor issues, the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor is a testament to the allure of Siem Reap and an excellent option for those who seek a harmonious blend of history and luxury. It is a magical retreat that promises to take guests on a journey of a lifetime, where every moment feels like a dream come true.

For this trip, we visited during the monsoon season in September.
The monsoon or rainy season starts from June to October. During these months, there are rains, sometimes throughout the day or in the afternoons. Don’t let the rains stop you from visiting. Most tourist areas are less crowded and the landscape is beautiful.

While the official currency in Cambodia is the Cambodian Riel (KHR), US Dollars are widely accepted and even preferred in many places, especially in tourist areas.
Is there a dress code for Angkor Wat?

Yes, there is a dress code at Angkor Wat. As Cambodia is a Buddhist nation with Angkor Wat being a living temple where the locals go to pray, it is best to dress modestly. This means avoiding showing bare shoulders, no tank tops, and spaghetti straps.
The safest choices would be either a long skirt, trousers or long dresses that cover the knees. Also, avoid baring your midriff as it is considered disrespectful. For men, it is best to wear long pants for temple runs.

What does bong mean in Cambodian?

In Cambodia, the term “bong” is widely used to address someone in a friendly and respectful manner. This term is typically used between friends, acquaintances, or even strangers. It is similar to using the terms “brother” or “sister” in English.
The use of “bong” reflects the warm and welcoming culture of Cambodia, where building strong interpersonal relationships is highly valued.
When you’re traveling in beautiful Cambodia, it’s important to take some time to connect with the locals. One of the best ways to do this is by expressing gratitude. In the official language of Cambodia, Khmer, saying “thank you” is a powerful way to show appreciation.
The word for “thank you” is “Orkun” (អរគុណ), which is pronounced as “aw-koon”. It may be a simple phrase, but it carries much meaning. When you say “Orkun” while looking the person in the eye, and with a genuine smile, you’re acknowledging their kindness and making a real connection.

While the tap water in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap is safe to drink, but, it is heavily chlorinated. Hence, it is not recommended to drink the tap water there. We bought plenty of bottled water and boiled the water whenever we needed a drink.

The popular bottled water brands available in Cambodia are Kulen, Dasani, Evian, and Fiji which were all cheap. We avoided the local bottled water as we were unsure of their origins and if they were filtered as advertised.

No, tipping in Cambodia is not customary in Cambodia. However, tipping at restaurants is common and if you feel that the service was excellent, a tip of 5% to 20% of the bill is appreciated. At hotels, it is a good idea to tip the bellboy who assisted you with your luggage.

Do not feel obliged to tip for poor service or if you feel you have been overcharged. While tour guides and tuk-tuk drivers may be persistently asking for a tip, you do have to give in to them. Always agree on the fare before boarding a tuk-tuk just to be on the safe side.
