Origins of Name

The earliest known name of France was Gaul which was given by the Romans to define the territories where Celtic Gauls lived. These territories in present times are France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy.

The Gauls were unique in that they were not a homogenous group of people, rather, they were a mixed group with varying religions and beliefs.

With the fall of the Roman Empire, the warring tribes of Franks, Vandals, and Visigoths began fighting for power. In the end, the Franks won. Under the leadership of King Clovis, the unified country was known as the ‘Land of the Franks’, and the Latin name Francia was given.

History

France’s history dates to pre-historic times where stone tools were found in Southern France. These stone tools were carbon-dated to 1.57 million years ago. However, no pre-historic human remains were ever found. However, an ancient volcanic lava flow has kept the remains of well-preserved mammals intact.

The Carnac Stones and the Lascaux Cave Paintings are two remarkable prehistoric sites, each with its own stories.

The stones are a Roman army turned to stone by Merlin who was a wizard in King Arthur’s court, if local legends are to be believed. Another legend mentions that these stones were a religious site used by the Druids, for ceremonial purposes.

From 1st BC onwards, the Romans and Carthaginians established colonies throughout Gaul (France). The Romans annexed Southern Gaul and renamed it Gallia Narbonensis Province.

The remaining territories of Gaul were conquered by Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars of 58-51 BC. By 486, King Clovis I had united the Northern and Central Gaul under his rule.

Mont St Michel

The first of our famous landmarks in France is Mont St Michel. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is beautiful as it is spiritual. Mont St Michel is the ‘Wonder of the West’ as it sits on a tidal island off the coasts of Normandy and Britanny.

The Benedictine Abbey dedicated to Archangel St Michael is at the center of this rocky islet. The Bishop of Avranches built a monastery here. He had apparently received a direct command from Archangel Michael on three separate occasions to build a monastery there. 

On 21st March 2015, a rare “super tide” turned this rocky islet into an island. This event happens once in 18 years. The four-story-high tide cut off the abbey which delighted tourists who had flocked the abbey in anticipation of the event. 

What is Mont Saint Michel famous for?

This place has a colorful history, from being a military stronghold to a pilgrimage site. Access to the island is free. However, there is an entrance fee to enter the abbey and museums on the island.

Pont Du Gard

The second of our famous landmarks in France is Pont du Gard or “Bridge of the Gard”. Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa built the aqueduct to transfer water to the nearby Roman town of Nemasus. This aqueduct is 48 meters in height and 275 meters in length and has 52 precision-built arches. This bridge was the highest during the Roman Empire.

Mont Blanc

The third of our famous landmarks in France is Mont Blanc or the “White Mountains”. With a height of 4,808 meters above sea level, Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps and the second highest mountain in Europe.

The Mont Blanc Massif borders France, Italy, and Switzerland. The massif has a granite core formed between 500 to 250 million years ago. Its summit was formed about 30 million years ago and is a result of the push and pull between the African and Asian tectonic plates about 30 million years ago.

The Verdon Gorge is important as it is the deepest in Europe at a depth between 250 to 700 meters. Verdon Gorge was formed during the Quaternary Era. Erosion from the Verdon River during the Jurassic era further contributed to its formation.

3. The Dome. The dome is the second-highest point in Paris and offers spectacular views of the city. It is a 300-step walk to the top, there are no elevators. 

The cathedral remains a place of worship and is open every day from 6 am to 10.30 pm. There is no entrance fee.

Pot-au-Feu or “pot on the fire” as it means is a warm, fragrant dish of stewing steak, root vegetables, and spices.

The main ingredients of this dish are inexpensive cuts of beef or meat that is suitable for long periods of cooking, either oxtail or marrowbone, root vegetables such as carrots, turnips, white cabbage, and leeks. Finally, seasonings such as salt, pepper, and cloves.

Where is Dubai?

Dubai is the capital city of the Emirates of Dubai. The United Arab Emirates consists of seven Emirates. The six other Emirates are the Emirates of Abu Dhabi, Emirates of Sharjah, Emirates of Ajman, Emirates of Fujairah, Emirates of Ras Al Khaimah, and the Emirates of Umm Al Quwain.

Situated on the Eastern end of the Arabian Peninsula along the Persian Gulf, Dubai has something for everyone. From beaches to the desert, or the souks or shopping malls, it is no wonder that Dubai has remained the fourth most visited city in the world in 2019. 

Origin of Name

The first written record which mentioned the name Dubai was in 1095 in The Book of Geography by Abu Abdullah Al Bakri. Further mention of the name was by Gaspero Balbi, a Venetian pearl trader who visited Dubai in 1580 for its pearl trade. 

What is the oldest pearl?

The oldest pearl is the “Abu Dhabi Pearl” which was found on Marawah Island. It was carbon-dated to 8,000 years ago and was probably worn as jewelry or used to trade with the Mesopotamians. 

However, there are many theories as to how the name came about. There is an Arabic proverb which states that “they came with Daba Dubai” which means they came with a swarm of locusts. The term Dubai meant locusts.

Another story is that the word comes from the word Yadub which means “to creep”. This refers to the way the creek creeps onto the land. British historians referred to Dubai as Al Wasl in the 1820s and included the geographical areas of Jumeirah, Bur Dubai, Shindagha, and Deira.

History

Dubai’s history can be divided into three periods which are pre-historic, the establishment of the United Arab Emirates, and modern Dubai as we now know it.

Pre-historic

The Mleiha Archaeological Center is significant as it proves that an early human settlement existed in the United Arab Emirates. The trading links were possible with the Indus Valley and Mesopotamian Civilizations.

During the early 1950s, archaeologists began excavating grave mounds in Bahrain, Oman, and Abu Dhabi. The copper, bronze pins, beads, and jars were from an unknown civilization. This civilization is now believed to be the Magan Civilization.

The first in our hidden gems in Dubai are these fossil dunes. These fossil dunes are in Al Wathba Wetland Reserves which is a 30-minute drive from Abu Dhabi. This wetland also has a large population of flamingos with about 4,000 living here during the spring and autumn months.

What are fossil dunes?

Fossil dunes are mother nature’s work of art. These dunes were formed a million years ago when this desert was once an ocean, thriving with life. Over time, the ocean dried up with sand and sediments began compacting.

Each compact layer was cemented by minerals and salt crystals into the stable structures we see today. These dunes are unique in that each is an interplay of wind strength and supply of sediment.

How do you get to the Fossil Dunes?

These dunes are approximately 44 miles southeast of Abu Dhabi. It is off the Abu-Dhabi-Al Ain Trunk Road (E30) and south of Al Wathba Wetland Reserves.

Origins of Name

The actual name for this island is Vestvågøya. Lofoten is from the Old Norse Lófót which means “lynx’s foot”. This is because the shape of the island was similar to the foot of a lynx.

These islands have been continuously occupied since 1120 when King Øystein built a church and lodgings for fishermen near Kabelvåg. Lofoten is the center of fishing, specifically, the Norwegian Arctic Cod or Skrei.

These migratory fish come from the Barents Sea to Northern Norway’s coast to spawn. The largest species of cod, the Atlantic Cod is found in the Norwegian Sea. It is also found in Lofoten, Senja, and Vestrålen from January to April every year.

Our second city, other than Lofoten Northern Lights is Senja. Senja is the second largest island in Norway. It is known for its wild west mountain regions that face the Atlantic Ocean. And, its quieter lush green eastern side.

The third city in our Lofoten Northern Lights is Alta. Alta is one of the most northernmost towns in the world. Other than the Northern Lights, this town is known for its rock carvings. These carvings are listed under UNESCO World Heritage Sites as it is Norway’s only pre-historic site.

This site is known as the Rock Art of Alta and dates back to 5000 BC. The carvings give an insight into how the living communicated with spirits and the cosmology of prehistoric hunters and gatherers.

Our fourth city other than Lofoten Northern Lights is Svalbard. This town was previously known as Spitsbergen is north of mainland Europe. Svalbard is unique in that it is the only place that experiences the midnight sun and polar nights. This means you can the auroras during at daytime on the long polar nights.

Midsummer is the best time to visit. This is because, at this time, the sun never sets below the horizon. To view polar bears, July and August are the best times to visit. However, if you are going for winter sports, the best times would be April and May.

Our fifth city, other than Lofoten Northern Lights is Helgeland. Helgeland is located south of the Arctic Circle and is characterized by mountains and glaciers. This region has been populated since the Vikings and Middle Ages.

North Cape

Our sixth city, other than Lofoten Northern Lights is North Cape. This cape is on the northernmost coast of Northern Norway. The plateau is a popular tourist attraction as it is suitable for viewing the midnight sun.

Our seventh and last city, other than Lofoten Northern Lights is Bodø. This municipality is located North of the Arctic Circle and is the 19th most populous municipality in Norway. The European Capital of Culture For 2024 includes Lofoten in its list.
